The primary mission of Student Life staff is to assist students in their development in a variety of ways. Student Life works with all segments of the University to help students develop themselves through opportunities for community service, volunteerism, leadership development, one on one and group advising.

The Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, serving as the Chief Student Affairs Officer, develops a vibrant, active campus life environment through the provision of intentionally developmental and deliberately engaging out-of-class programs and services. The Vice President, in partnership with faculty, staff and students, creates a vision for and directs assigned staff toward efforts that foster community development and connection to the University, encourage health and wellness, and stimulate the intellectual, social, and leadership development of students. The Vice President utilizes a direct and hands on approach in working with staff to visibly bridge liberal and professional learning in the co-curricular environment.

The Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students, publishes the Student Handbook, registers students to vote and helps to coordinate emergency response and crisis intervention strategies with the Office of Public Safety. Also, the Vice President for Student Life contributes to the achievement of enrollment goals by designing programs that contribute to the recruitment and retention of students and by assisting other departments with enrollment related initiatives.

The rights and responsibilities of students are published in this catalog as well as in other University publications. Each student is responsible for knowing the University’s code of conduct and complying with it. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects most student records. Maryville complies with all state and federal laws. More information is available in the Student Handbook which is published annually. The Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students also advises the Maryville Student Government (MSG). MSG provides students with the opportunity to become involved in the Maryville community through a wide range of activities and responsibilities. MSG works with students and the administration in a continued effort to sustain and improve student life at Maryville. Membership in MSG is open to all Maryville students. For students who wish to hold office, elections are held twice each year to fill officer and senate positions. Through student government sponsorship more than 35 student organizations receive operating funds each year. The Academic Success Center provides academic support services for all students. These free services include:

• Accommodations for students with disabilities
• Peer tutoring
• Study skills materials
• Learning style inventories
• Individual consultation regarding academic success

In conjunction with the College of Arts and Sciences, a Writing Center is also located in the Academic Success Center. Writing Center consultants provide individualized assistance with writing projects assigned by instructors. Strategies to improve writing skills are recommended.

The Writing Center also maintains rhetoric textbooks, guides for writing research papers, grammar handbooks, grammar exercises and pamphlets.

Writers can avail themselves of computers to facilitate the writing process. All terminals are connected to the Internet and campus network. Students are encouraged to use lab computers to write and revise their papers, but they should first discuss their assignment with staff in the Writing Center.

Students with disabilities have a right to participate in and benefit from all programs offered at Maryville, which is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to assure an equally effective opportunity for students with disabilities to demonstrate their academic abilities. Maryville University offers intercollegiate athletic opportunities for women in cross country, golf, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis and track and field. For men, cross-country, soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf and track and field are offered. Maryville is a member of NCAA Division III and the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). The Department of Athletics is located in the Simon Athletic Center, 314.529.9313.

The Simon Center houses the Moloney Arena, the Fitness Center (equipped with treadmills, elliptical striders, stationary bikes, extensive muscle specific and multifunction pieces, free weights and other fitness equipment), aerobics and exercise studio, locker room, and shower facilities. These services are open to all students, faculty, and staff free of charge.

Campus Ministry and Community Service seeks to support students, faculty and staff of all faiths by assisting them with their spiritual and personal growth and development with co-curricular opportunities representing aspects of Maryville’s desire to educate the whole person. Currently, four campus spiritual student organizations as well as the community outreach efforts of local ministries also support the spiritual needs of our students. Through the cooperation of these groups and the Office of Campus Ministry and Community Service, numerous activities such as retreats, reflections, conferences, scripture studies, service projects, guest speakers and forums on a variety of topics support Maryville University’s goal to create and maintain a vibrant campus life.

In addition, Campus Ministry and Community Service collaborates with students, faculty and staff to create awareness of local, national and global social issues, promote social responsibility and support community service outreach to the greater St. Louis community and beyond. We reinforce the learning from those experiences through reflection and discussion. Recent community service opportunities have included projects such as planting trees in an urban park; painting at a community center in an economically disadvantaged city; collecting canned goods for Circle of Concern, a food pantry; adopting Appalachian and local families for the winter holidays; cooking meals at St. Patrick’s Center, a homeless shelter and collecting toiletries for Lydia’s house, a shelter for battered women and children. Other projects have included service activities with organizations such as Haven House, the Special Olympics, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, St. Louis Food Bank, Missouri School for the Blind and Boys Hope Girls Hope. The Office of Career Education guides students toward developing confidence, skills and strategies necessary to identify, work toward and achieve career satisfaction. Career education is a developmental process in which students learn to take active responsibility for their professional lives and learn lifelong strategies for success beyond graduation. The Office of Career Education provides opportunities for students to develop and write a strong resume, practice and improve professional interview skills, and organize effective and successful job searches. Students can participate in career fairs, mock interviews, etiquette dinners and other career preparation events.

In order to prepare for the competitive job market, students are encouraged to integrate their academic goals with an internship or cooperative education opportunity. Career Education serves as a link between Maryville students, the faculty members and the employers who jointly provide this type of learning experience.

Maryville University is interested in the whole person and therefore seeks to assist the student in maintaining, developing or improving his/her health and well-being. Free, confidential health and wellness care and education are provided to all students. This is accomplished through personal assessment and consultation, dispensing of some over the counter medications, referral to outside practitioners and agencies as needed and testing for tuberculosis, HIV, pregnancy and allergy injections (with private physician approval). Insurance information and many helpful connections and resources, including maps to local health care facilities, are available on the website and in print in our office (www.maryville.edu/campuslife/health/default.htm). Programming, classroom presentation and facilitation regarding smoking cessation, nutrition, stress management, alcohol and drugs, relationships and sexual health are some of the topics available. The nurse provides, for a small fee, influenza vaccination each fall, and for a limited time, free Hepatitis A, B or AB combined vaccination. CPR and first aid training is available for a fee.

Maryville’s consulting physician, Dr. Steven Willey, is located across the street at St. Luke’s Hospital complex and charges a reduced fee for care of students with acute minor illness.

It is recommended that all students complete the health form, but certain students are required to complete the health form: students living in university housing, athletes and students students in the School of Health Professions. See the health form (available online) for details.

The Office of Multicultural Programs promotes academic and personal growth of traditionally underserved students and assists the university in becoming an academic community where people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities are understood and valued; and provides educational activities for the entire campus community.

Multicultural Programs is responsible for organizing, planning and implementing the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, as well as Black History, Women’s History, Hispanic Heritage, and Native-American Heritage Celebrations. The office staff is also responsible for providing diversity training for student leaders and organizations on campus with the idea of developing culturally competent students thereby enhancing the multicultural environment of the University.

Maryville University offers free, short-term, confidential counseling to all Maryville students. Services available include individual and group counseling, educational workshops, and referrals to outside psychiatric and mental health resources.

The Personal Counseling Office is located in Mouton Hall, ground floor, 314.529.9556.

The Office of Recreation & Intramurals exists to provide and create opportunities for students to develop themselves physically, encourages student interest in a host of non-varsity athletic activities and give students an opportunity to learn new skills through recreation programming that will serve them throughout their lives.

Recreation & Intramurals offers the community a comprehensive program of intramural sports, recreational tournaments, and services that deliberately target students’ recreational needs and interest. In addition, this office manages the Donius University Center Game Room and schedules related programs and learning opportunities utilizing the fitness center and aerobics studio (aerobics classes, equipment rental, billiards, etc.) on a regular basis.

The mission of the Office of Recreation & Intramurals is to enhance the quality of life for the Maryville community by providing programs and service that encourage healthy interaction and create a sense of fair play. The office is located in the Donius University Center Game Room, 314.529.9476.

Maryville University has both residence hall and apartment housing available to meet a variety of different lifestyles and student needs. Maryville operates two air-conditioned, co-educational residence halls housing a maximum of 367 students. Residence hall rooms are double occupancy with a limited number of single rooms available for upper-division students. Lounges and laundry rooms are available on each floor and 24-hour computer labs and kitchenettes are available in each building. Food service board plans are included in the residence hall contract costs. Three food service plans are available to residence halls students for additional flexibility.

Maryville University apartments offer 75 apartment units housing 250 students in five buildings. Two different floor plans are available with a 4 bedroom/2 bath and 2 bedroom/2 bath configuration. Apartment housing offers private bedrooms for each resident as well as a full kitchen and living room space. A board plan is not required for apartment residents, but an optional board plan is available for an additional price if desired.

All university residence units are wired for local phone service and use of the university voice mail system. In addition, extended basic cable television service with two premium channels is available in each room and the lounge areas. Wireless and ethernet connections are also available in each room.

The Office of Student Involvement exists to develop programs and services that facilitate involvement at the University that will positively impact the creation of a vibrant, active and synergistic campus life. Student involvement is defined in the broadest sense to insure participation by all members of the Maryville community in creating and maintaining an exciting and responsive campus community. The emphasis of the office is the student experience at Maryville including activities, events and leadership development which happens outside of the classroom.

This office works with individual students, student organizations and student committees to enhance the activities and services offered at Maryville University. Direct support and guidance is given to members and advisors of the 40+ student organizations on campus as well as the establishment of many campus wide programming initiatives that are student driven and implemented. The Campus Activities Board, the student programming board, is advised through the professional staff in this office. All other events and activities sponsored by student organizations or departments are registered and supported through this office as well.

In addition, the Office of Student Involvement supports the Keith Lovin Institute for Leadership and Values. This campus–wide, selective program includes Alchemy, a freshman-year experience focusing on leadership skill development and the Institute for Leadership and Values, a three year intensive program focusing on leadership and value development in conjunction with community service and citizenship.

The professional staff include the Director of Student Involvement, the Program Coordinator, a part-time Administrative Assistant and a Graduate Assistant, who work with faculty, staff and students to assess involvement needs for the campus as well as identifying the leadership tools and training that are required to empower students to make things happen at Maryville University.

The Donius University Center, the main hub of activity on campus, and the Buder Family Student Commons are also managed out of this office. The Office of Student Involvement is located in the Donius University Center, 314.529.9480.

With almost 75 student members, including a student executive staff of 13, the Campus Activities Board (CAB) dreams, conceptualizes and executes the dozens of events happening each month to generate activity, community and overall student involvement on Maryville’s campus. Events range from a monthly movie series to Saturday night comedy shows. An acoustic musical coffee house features regional musical acts and also invites Maryville students to strut their talents at the annual “Open Mic” night. CAB is also responsible for the planning and implementing of the week of events surrounding traditional events including Fall Festival, the annual Siblings Weekend, Casino Night and a spring weekend of events, Best Weekend Ever. In addition to having a great time, students involved in CAB allow themselves the opportunities to build skills and shape the Maryville community into an active and vibrant campus that fits their needs.
