Characteristics of a Maryville Baccalaureate Graduate

Programs of Study and General Education

All undergraduate programs at Maryville University are designed to ensure that graduates acquire the skills and knowledge expected of a liberally educated person as well as in-depth knowledge in a chosen major field of study.

A liberal education includes study in the following areas:

  • Humanities including English, foreign languages, philosophy and religious studies
  • Fine and Performing Arts including studio art, art history, graphic design, interior design, music, music history and performance
  • Social Sciences including history, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology
  • Natural Sciences including biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics and science
  • Math

The following describe the desirable characteristics of a Maryville graduate as established by the faculty:

Communication

The graduate will be proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  The graduate will civilly engage complex issues through creative and professional presentations.

Critical Thinking and Creativity

The graduate will be competent in higher order thinking, including disciplined inquiry, logical and critical analysis, and creative interpretation and evaluation incorporating diverse perspectives.

Technological Literacy

The graduate will be a discerning user of current and evolving technologies, understanding and adapting them as tools for learning and expression.

Research And Evidence Analysis

The graduate will be competent in the methods of critical inquiry using both qualitative and quantitative information from his or her primary discipline.

Global and Cultural Consciousness

The graduate will be able to appreciate the diversity of the human condition and to understand, work, live, and thrive within the global community.  The graduate will appreciate the varied artistic legacies and other creative achievements representing the human experience in all its diversity.

Social Awareness And Civic Engagement

The graduate will be able to exhibit leadership and active engagement in local, national, and global communities to both strengthen those communities and assist others.

Professional and Personal Responsibility

The graduate will demonstrate objectivity, integrity, and ethical behavior.  The graduate will appreciate the importance of a commitment to excellence, life-long learning, and healthy behaviors.

Environmental Stewardship

The graduate will be able to make informed decisions about the intersection between economics and the environment to sustain the world for future generations.
