Application forms for The Weekend & Evening College are available through all WEC offices. Students must develop an academic plan with their advisers; advisers are available at all WEC locations for day, evening and weekend appointments.

Maryville University is a Test-Optional Institution

Maryville University does not require the submission of standarized test scores for students applying for freshmen or transfer admission, except in select circumstances outlined below.  Students who feel their SAT or ACT scores are an accurate reflection of their academic abilities are welcome to submit them for admission consideration, scholarship consideration and/or course placement; however, students who do not submit test scores will not be viewed negatively.

In support of our strategic plan as it relates to access and in alignment with our admissions philosophy of holistic review, each applicant will be reviewed based upon their academic record, extracurricular activities, recommendations and essay for evidence of potential for success in college. 

Required High School Coursework for full admission consideration:

• 4 years of English
• 3 years of History of Social Science
• 3 years of Math, including coursework in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II
• 3 years of Natural Science, including coursework in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics

Recommended High School Coursework for enhanced readiness for university level coursework

• 4 years of English
• 4 years of History of Social Science
• 4 years of Math, including coursework in AlgebraI, Geometry, Algebra II, and Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, or AP Calculus, or any other math coursework of comparable rigor and content
• 4 years of Natural Science, including coursework in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Biology II, Chemistry II, Physics II, or any other science coursework of comparable rigor and content

If available to the student, Honors courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) program courses can also assist in review and course placement.

Test-Optional will not apply to the following groups of students

1. International students are required to submit standarized test scores to prove English proficiency and should consult International Admission for information.
2. Prospective student athletes are mandated by the NCAA to submit standardized test scores for athletic eligibility
3. Students applying from secondary schools/organizations that provide only narrative evaluations rather than some form of grading scale
4. Direct-Entry Physical Therapy Program
           a. 3.0 cumulative GPA or ACT composite of 24 or SAT CR+M score range of 1090-1120
5. Nursing
           a. 3.0 cumulative GPA and ACT composite of 23 or SAT CR+M score of 1070

The following academic programs require specific minimum GPA ‘s for admission consideration:

1. Early Direct Admit Occupational Therapy Program requires a cumulative 3.25 Highschool GPA
2. Fast-Track Nursing program requires a cumulative 3.25 collegiate GPA.

How to Apply for Admission

To complete the Maryville application process, the undergraduate applicant must submit the following:

1. Application for admission. Applications are available online at www.maryville.edu.
2. Official copy of high school transcript (unless specified otherwise) or GED score (except students who have a bachelor’s degree).
3. Official transcripts from each college or university previously attended.
4. Any other documentation required by a specific Maryville academic program.

In addition to meeting the general University requirements, applicants for actuarial science, studio art, clinical laboratory science, education, graphic design, health science, interior design, music therapy, nursing, occupational therapy and physical therapy must meet specific requirements which are described both in program literature and in this section of the catalog. Students who are not admitted to one of these programs but who meet the general admission requirements of the University may enter with an undeclared major or may request admission under a different major.

Most admission decisions are made on an ongoing basis. As soon as an applicant’s file is complete, it is processed and the applicant is notified by letter of the decision.

New Freshmen

Freshman applicants are encouraged to apply after their junior year in high school. To be admitted, they should have:

1. A high school diploma with a minimum of 22 units of credit including four units of English, three units of mathematics, two units of science, two units of social sciences (social studies) and three additional units in any of the above areas or in a foreign language.
2. A high school grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
3. An ACT assessment composite score of 20 or an SAT-I (Scholastic Assessment Test) combined score of 950.
4. Freshman applicants who do not meet all three of the criteria listed above, and GED applicants (who are considered on a case-by-case basis) may be asked to submit additional material, come to Maryville for a personal interview, and/or complete additional testing before an admission decision is made.

GED Applicants

• Applicants must earn a 2600 minimum score with no single test below 500 for admission to Maryville.
• An ACT test is not required unless specified by the academic program (ex. PT, OT, etc.)
• An ACT test is required if the student wishes to be considered for academic scholarships.

Home School Students

Students completing their education through a Home School program must submit the same documentation required for all new incoming freshmen. In addition, students need to meet the published admissions criteria for incoming freshmen. If the student does not meet these requirements, additional documentation may be requested.

Transfer Students

Transfer students are considered for admission primarily on the basis of their academic work at all transfer institutions as reflected in their required college or university transcripts.

1. A 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in college work is required for admission. Students with less than a 2.0 GPA will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be asked to participate in a personal interview and testing before an admission decision is made.
2. An ACT or SAT score is required for admission to certain programs.
3. High school transcripts are required for transfer students with fewer than 30 transferable hours or for admission to certain programs.
4. A maximum of 68 credit hours from a two-year college will be counted toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree.
5. A completed associate’s degree in a specific area will be counted as a minor in the completion of a bachelor’s degree. If courses from the associate’s degree subject area are applied to the major, those courses must be replaced by additional courses for the minor.
6. Students who possess an Associate in Arts General Transfer degree from an accredited institution which follows the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education guidelines, or a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, will have fulfilled Maryville’s General Education requirement.
7. For the completion of a bachelor’s degree, at least the last 30 credit hours must be taken at Maryville.
8. One half of the major and minor (if required) must be taken at Maryville.

Re-entry Students

Re-entry students who previously attended Maryville, but have not been enrolled for two consecutive prior semesters at Maryville, need to complete and submit the application for re-admission and submit it to the Office of Admissions. A re-entry student also must submit an official transcript from any college or university attended since the last date of attendance at Maryville. No application fee is required unless the student previously had not sought a degree and now wishes to apply as a degree-seeking student or is applying to a graduate or post-baccalaureate program for the first time. Credits earned prior to re-entry may be subject to re-evaluation based on program changes which took effect during the break in attending Maryville.

Special Program Requirements for International Students

Academic Programs

Initial inquiries, as well as all completed applications, should be directed to the Office of Admissions. International students must submit the following:

1. International application for admission. (Applications are available online at http://www.maryville.edu.)
2. Non-refundable application processing fee (checks payable to Maryville University).
3. One Letter of Recommendation from a teacher or counselor
4. Proof of English proficiency (typically TOEFL or IELTS test scores).  Check specific program for language proficiency requirements.
5. Official English translated copies of high school (secondary) transcripts or GED score (except students who have a bachelor’s degree). This transcript must show completion of secondary school.
6. Official English translated copies of transcripts from all college or universities previously attended. Official copies of transcripts must be translated in English using the World Education Services, Inc. (WES) www.wes.org.
7. TOEFL score of 500; Undergraduate TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into Maryville with speaking sub-score of 23 or higher and a combined score of 61 or higher.
8. Financial certification in two forms is required in English: A letter of support from sponsor and a bank statement from sponsor’s bank account with dollar amounts stated.
9. Any other documentation required by a specific Maryville academic program.
10. Pay enrollment deposit.

An I-20 form will be issued to facilitate acquisition of a student visa upon receipt of all documents, applications and requirements.

English Requirements for Undergraduate Admission

Maryville requires that international students score 500 or above on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and demonstrate writing proficiency in English before beginning full-time undergraduate academic work. International transfer students must meet the same English proficiency requirements as entering freshmen. Students in the actuarial science, physical therapy and nursing programs must have a TOEFL score of at least 550; students in the undergraduate business programs must have a TOEFL score of at least 525.

This requirement applies to international students who are from countries where English is not the language of instruction, who have not otherwise been admitted to the university in undergraduate status, and who are applying to the university for admission directly into a second undergraduate degree program.

U.S. High School or International Secondary School

ESL Language Center

• Full admission if completed ELS level 112 with a 2.5 grade or better
• Conditional admission if completed ELS level 106 to 111 with a 2.5 grade or better, must take institutional TOEFL upon arrival               

A/O levels

• Full admission if A-level in English with an “A” grade or better
• O-level students are required to take the TOEFL exam

U.S. University/College study

• Full admission if completed at least 24 credits of 100-level or above coursework with at least a 2.0 GPA and completed English Composition with a “C” grade or better

2 years of study at an English speaking school

• Present TOEFL (477 or above) and meet academic 2.0 GPA requirement for conditional admission and must take institutional TOEFL upon arrival
• For Full admission: SAT writing 470, ACT writing/English 20, or meet TOEFL requirement

IELTS

• Full admission for IELTS 6.0 or above on overall band score.
• Conditional admission for IELTS 5.5 on overall band score, must take institutional TOEFL upon arrival 

LSI

• Full admission not possible
• Conditional admission if completed the LSI Upper Intermediate level, must take institutional TOEFL upon arrival 

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)

• Full admission for 44, must take institutional TOEFL upon arrival
• Conditional admission for ­38, must take institutional TOEFL upon arrival 

TOEFL

• Full admission with a score of 500 (paper-based), or 61 (internet-based) or higher
• Conditional admission for TOEFL 477 (paper based), or 53 (internet-based).  Must take institutional TOEFL upon arrival

Students who complete ELS Level 112 may be admitted to the University without submitting a TOEFL score, provided they meet the entrance requirements of their degree program and all other University admission requirements. TOEFL scores may be required for specific degree programs.

International Transfer Students

1. Items 1-8 above and academic program English requirement above.
2. International students transferring from other U.S. colleges or universities who successfully complete 24 hours of 100 level or above coursework with a 2.0 or higher grade point average are not required to submit a TOEFL score.
3. International students transferring from other U.S. colleges or universities must follow all guidelines but #5 in the International student section when applying for admission.

Official transcripts should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions at Maryville University. (Transcripts issued to students will not be accepted as official.)

International students who transfer to Maryville from foreign universities, or who wish to receive credit for courses taken outside the U.S., should send official or notarized copies of their transcripts, translated into English using the World Education Services, Inc. (WES) www.wes.org. A course-by-course evaluation from WES is required. Foreign transcripts will be evaluated for transfer credit only after the student has arrived at Maryville. Further information on this organization and the costs related to translation of transcripts can be found at www.wes.org.

Non-Degree Seeking

Students may enroll in up to six credit hours a semester and up to fifteen (15) credit hours total without formally declaring a program, degree or certification. However, no student can take more than two courses in any program that has special admission requirements without prior written permission of the dean. All non-degree seeking students must complete a guest student application and submit it to the Office of Admissions or The Weekend & Evening College. No application fee is required. To earn credits in excess of the stipulated maximum requires petitioning for Exemption to Academic Policy.

Special Admission Requirements for Undergraduate Academic Programs

Actuarial Science

Students applying for admission to the actuarial science program should have a strong mathematics aptitude. High school grades in mathematics should be consistently in the upper range.

Art & Design

To adequately prepare for our incoming students, as a diagnostic tool, a portfolio of creative work is highly suggested. Visual media of any form can be submitted such as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, animation, fashion, sketchbooks, design work, yearbook, etc. All portfolio submissions will be evaluated for Art & Design scholarship opportunities.

If you are interested in an Art & Design program but have not had the opportunity to develop a body of work during your high school experience, we encourage you to apply. You may begin an Art & Design program without an entrance portfolio.

Evaluation Criteria

• Creative ability
• Understanding and sensitivity to composition and basic elements of art and design such as line, shape, texture, space, color, mass/form
• Focus and range of aesthetic interests
• Perceptual skills (drawing or construction ability)
• Craft and/or technical ability

Guidelines

• The portfolio should contain a variety of at least 10, but no more than 20 examples of the applicant’s best and most recent original work.
• Visual media of any form produced as a class assignment or on ones own initiative can be submitted for evaluation.
• Electronic submission (web-based portfolio platforms such as https://www.behance.net/, portable drive, or CD/DVD) is encouraged. Traditional portfolios are also accepted.

Recommendations

• Drawings from observation in any media (still life, self-portrait, figure, etc.) Works copied from photographs are discouraged.
• Sketchbooks
• Pieces which demonstrate ability to work in color such as drawings, paintings, prints, photography, or design
• Three-dimensional work such as ceramics, sculpture, fibers, or fashion (may be documented and submitted as digital images)
• Photography, film, animation, or video
• Specialized media such as graphic design, interior design, and web sites. (Note: specialized media is not required for admission or scholarship evaluation for any of our programs)
• Work completed on ones own initiative, beyond a class assignment may be included.

Art & Design Transfers:

Transfer students with prior art and design course work are required to present a portfolio for evaluation. The portfolio should contain as much work as possible from each course for which they seek credit. Additional examples from experiences outside of completed course work such as materials produced for internships, employment, and personal projects are also acceptable. The work submitted should be clearly labeled including title; project description; and course name, number, and instructor. Electronic submission (web-based portfolio platforms or portable drive) is encouraged. Traditional portfolios are also accepted. 

Clinical Laboratory Science

Freshmen must have an ACT score of 20+ and a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5. A math and science high school GPA of 3.0 is highly recommended. Transfer students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and a math and science GPA of 2.75 from college coursework.

Students who do not fulfill these requirements may be considered for admission after a personal interview with the program adviser.

Education

Admission to Maryville University does not guarantee admission to the teacher education program. Students must apply for admission by the completion of 10 credit hours in professional education. Transfer students must apply for admission to the program upon application to Maryville. Bridge students apply during their junior year for the graduate programs. Pre-service students must be admitted to the teacher education program to progress beyond the beginning education block or for transfers their first semester in the second education block.  Specific requirements and applications for all programs may be obtained from the School of Education Office. All requirements are subject to change if Missouri certification requirements change.Teacher education admission requirements include the following:

1. Maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA (3.0 graduate candidates) based on a 4.0 scale
2. Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in all education courses with no grade below a “C-“
3. Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in academic content area (Middle, Secondary and Art candidates only)
4. Receive a passing score on the Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA) (undergraduates)
5. Receive a satisfactory evaluation in the initial field experience
6. Complete initial criminal background screening.

Music Therapy

Admission Requirements

1. A TOEFL score of 550 with no subscore under 50 for students for whom English is a second language. Undergraduate TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into the Music Therapy  program with a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 85 or higher.
2. Applicants to the Music Therapy program are required to complete an audition with the Music Therapy faculty.  The students are asked to demonstrate their musical performance abilities by having two pieces of music prepared for performance on their major instrument /voice.
3. Applicants must take the Music Theory Proficiency and Placement Examination. The exam will determine a student’s placement in music theory.
4. Students will be asked to complete the “Music Experience” form to bring to their audition. The form asks students to list all of their experiences with private music study and music ensemble participation (choirs, bands, orchestra, other).
5. Once the audition process has been successfully completed, the student will be fully accepted in the program.  Music Therapy majors are expected to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
6. The audition is ideally accomplished in the semester prior to admission. In the event that a student, because of distance, is not able to come to campus in the months prior to admission, a video recording of the student’s musical performance may be submitted. Nursing

Admission Requirements

1. Admission to Maryville University
2. Traditional BSN Program: A cumulative high school and college (if applicable) GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
3. Weekend and Evening College BSN Program: A cumulative college GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
4. ACT composite score of 23 (ACT scores not required for students having completed more than 24 college credits.)
5. A TOEFL score of 550 with no subscore under 50 for students for whom English is a second language. Undergraduate TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into the Nursing program with a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 85 or higher.
6. Advanced placement in the basic baccalaureate nursing program is available for transfer students with college credit in nursing courses. Science courses must have been completed within the last seven years.
7. Documentation of health requirements, background checks and a urine drug screen must be acceptable prior to clinical coursework.

Admission Requirements of the RN to the BSN Nursing Program

1. Admission to Maryville University
2. Current licensure as a registered nurse.
3. Cumulative college GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
4. A TOEFL score of 550 with no subscore under 50 for students for whom English is a second language. Undergraduate TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into the Nursing program with a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 85 or higher.
5. Documentation of health requirements.
6. Nursing degree from a country other than the United States must request an evaluation from the Commission on Graduates from Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) www.cgfns.org.
7. Students who are accepted into the program must adhere to the student policies outlined in the Nursing Student Handbook. Background checks and a urine drug screen must be acceptable prior to clinical coursework.

Additional Admission Requirements for the Fast Track Option

• A minimum college grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 in all college course work
• A minimum ACT of 23 (Note: This is a requirement regardless of how many college credits have been taken.)

If the applicant has taken Anatomy and Physiology I & II, these courses must have been successfully completed within 7 years of the anticipated start date.

Graduate Admissions

General Requirements

1. Program application for admission.
2. Non-refundable application processing fee.
3. Official transcripts from undergraduate, and, if applicable, graduate institutions attended.
4. International students must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 550.

Transfer of Credit

No more than six credits can be transferred into any master’s degree program. Only credits from an accredited college or university may be transferred into Maryville.

Special Admission Requirements for Graduate Academic Programs

College of Arts and Sciences

Master of Science in Actuarial Science

1. Application for admission.
2. Non-refundable application processing fee
3. GRE (Graduate Record Exam): a minimum score of 600 on the mathematics quantitative sections.
4. GPA (Grade Point Average): at least 3.0 (on 4.0 scales) on the last two years of the baccalaureate degree.
5. A baccalaureate degree in mathematics or science or related field from a regionally accredited college or university verified on original transcripts sent by the institution directly to Maryville University. The student should be able to demonstrate a strong mathematics background through grades in mathematics courses, an undergraduate B.Sc. thesis involving mathematics, sciences, or risk analysis, or work experience involving actuarial science.
6. Two letters of recommendation.
7. International students must submit a TOEFL score of 550. TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into the MBA program with a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher and a combined score of 79 or higher.
8. A letter of intent.

Master of Arts in Strategic Communication and Leadership

1. Completed online application;
2. A 300-word written statement of purpose that explains why you have chosen the Strategic Communication and Leadership program and how it will help you accomplish your education and/or career goals;
3. Resume;
4. Official transcripts of all graduate and undergraduate work;
5. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

International Students must also submit:

1. College/university transcripts that have been professionally evaluated. See “Special Program Requirements for International Students.”
2. Official TOEFL score for applicants whose native language is not English (minimum score of 85 IBT).

Conditional Acceptance

For those students whose grades do not meet the overall minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or whose admissions application is incomplete, conditional acceptance may be granted provided there is other evidence that the applicant has the ability to do satisfactory graduate work. Such evidence might include an excellent record of graduate work at another institution, high scores on any of the graduate school tests, or exceptional professional experience.

Students whose undergraduate GPA is under 3.0 will be re-evaluated after they have taken 6 graduate credits. If their graduate GPA is lower than 3.0, they will be asked to withdraw from the program. Students who have been granted conditional acceptance due to incomplete admissions applications must complete their application prior to beginning their third course. Their applications will be re-evaluated as soon as all documents have been received.

The John E. Simon School of Business

Master of Business Administration

1. Application for admission.
2. Personal letter explaining qualifications for graduate work.
3. International students must submit a TOEFL score of 563. TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into the MBA program with a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher and a combined score of 85 or higher.  TOEFL iBT of 85 (PBT - 563) is equivalent to an IELTS 6.0.

Conditional Acceptance

Applicants to the MBA program with a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale may apply for conditional acceptance.

School of Education

Master of Arts in Education

1. Application for admission.
2. Cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0.
3. Three satisfactory professional recommendations.
4. Submission of an acceptable essay demonstrating critical writing skills.
5. International students also must submit a TOEFL score of 550 to pursue any graduate-level course work in the School of Education. Undergraduate TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into the Master of Arts in Education program with a speaking sub-score of 23 or higher and a combined score of 79 or higher.
6. Many programs may also require an on-site interview and/or writing sample.

Prospective students who already have obtained a baccalaureate degree and who wish to become certified in the State of Missouri to teach early childhood, elementary, middle-level or K-12 art education may apply to the Post A.B./ Certification/M.A. in Education program upon entrance to the M.A.Ed. A transcript analysis is required to verify any additional certification requirements.

Provisional Acceptance

Applicants to the M.A.Ed. program who show potential for success but lack one of the criteria for full admission, such as a GPA below 3.0, may apply for provisional acceptance. This status must be changed to full admission by the completion of nine hours of graduate coursework at Maryville University with a 3.0 GPA and evidence of satisfactory writing skills.

The School of Education Graduate Admissions Committee reviews the completed files and recommends for admission. Candidates who do not meet the criteria may be assigned a provisional acceptance; decisions are made on a case-to-case basis (see above). Candidates also pursuing an initial teaching certificate in Elementary, ECE, Middle School or K-12 Art will have their criteria reviewed by the Pre-Service Student Personnel Committee after they have completed initial course work for admission into the certification program of their choice.

All candidates in graduate programs in the School of Education must maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average and exhibit acceptable levels of professional behavior. A student may receive no more than one “C” semester grade in their program. A candidate will be dismissed from the program during the semester when they receive a second grade of “C” or the first “D” or “F” grade.

Master of Arts in Education/Secondary Teaching and Inquiry

Students who have obtained a bachelor’s degree in English, history, mathematics, or biology, chemistry or physics and who wish to teach in the secondary school may apply to the Master of Arts in Education/Secondary Teaching and Inquiry. Students with a B.A. or B.S. should have their undergraduate transcripts analyzed for certification requirements in the content area. This is the only way to obtain secondary teaching certification at Maryville University.

1. Application for admission.
2. Cumulative B.A. grade point average of 3.0.
3. Grade point average of 3.0 in teaching area (major).
4. Three satisfactory recommendations from past teachers or employers.
5. Satisfactory completion of on-site essay.
6. Satisfactory interview with the mentoring triad.
7. Passing score on the appropriate Missouri Content Assessment certification test.

Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

These programs are designed for practicing professionals. The Ed.D. with a concentration in educational leadership is for those who have already completed an M.A. in Education and initial licensure for the principalship. The Ed.D. with a concentration in higher education leadership is for those employed in higher education institutions or in schools or organizations with an expressed interest in working within higher education. The Ed.D. with a concentration in teacher leadership is for experienced teachers who want to lead from their classrooms or schools.

6. Upon evaluation of individual credentials, up to nine hours of post-M.A. credit may be transferred to the Ed.D.

College of Health Professions

Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology

1. Application for admission, either online or paper, must be completed.

2. Official transcripts of all college and university courses completed must be sent directly to Maryville University from the registrar of each institution attended. Students who have attended institutions outside the United States should provide comparably certified and evaluated documents (the use of services such as World Education Services –WES is highly recommended).
3. A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution is required for acceptance into the master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Maryville University.  This degree must be in communication sciences and disorders or speech-language pathology; alternatively, the “bridge” program or “leveling” sequence of undergraduate courses may be completed here at Maryville in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree in the major. Please see below for listing of our undergraduate courses, with courses required for the “bridge” program appearing in bold-faced font. 
4. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
5. Applicant must complete and submit official scores from the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), including Verbal, Analytical, and Writing components. 
6. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation.  Please use references who know your professional qualifications and academic readiness for graduate study.  Please use the reference forms located under “Downloadable Forms” which contains portions to be completed by both you and your references.  Reference forms should be sent (by your references) directly to the Maryville University Speech-Language Pathology Program.
7. Applicants must submit a Resume or Curriculum Vitae.
8. International students must submit proof of English proficiency. The TOEFL or IELTS exam is the most common test of English proficiency. Conditional admission is not available for graduate applicants. A combined score of 100 or higher on the TOEFL is acceptable with minimum sub-scores of the following: speaking sub score of 27, writing sub-score of 23, reading sub-score of 23, and listening sub-score of 27, for students whom English is a second language. A TOEFL paper-based score of 603 with sub-scores of speaking 62, writing 60, reading 57, and listening 62 is acceptable. An IELTS score of 7.0 or higher is also acceptable.

Clinical Requirements

1. Completed physical examinations annually
2. Immunity to Measles/Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella, and Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap), Polio, Varicella or Positive Varicella Titer and Hepatitis B (a Hepatitis B declination statement is acceptable in lieu of immunization)
3. TB-Tuberculin PPD test (documented 2-step initially, then annual)
4. Annual flu vaccine
5. CPR and First Aid Certification
6. Criminal background checks and urine drug screening records
7. Verification of health insurance to cover injuries that students may incur while engaged in the Educational Program at the Clinical Center
8. Fitting for a respiratory isolation device (i.e. N95 mask), if required by Clinical Center
9. Nicotine screening, if required by Clinical Center 
10. Signed release of information forms to allow Criminal Record Background Check, Urine Drug Screen, health and other pertinent data to be provided to the Clinical Education Program and to the Clinical Center facilities where the student completes clinical experiences.

Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling

1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
2. Official transcripts of all college and university courses completed, sent directly to Maryville University by the registrar of each institution attended.  Students who have attended institutions outside the United States should provide comparably certified and evaluated documents.

5. Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for full acceptance to program. Conditional acceptance for one semester may be given to those individuals who do not meet this standard but have demonstrated exceptional strengths worthy of review.
6. Resume or Curriculum Vitae.  Please include the contact information (including name, professional title, organization, phone number and email address) for two professional references.  Submissino of your resume serves as permission to contact references.
7. International students must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 563.  Applicants who take the revised TOEFL must achieve a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 21 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 85 or higher.  Applicants who take the IELTS must achieve a minimum score of 6.5.  Students not obtaining these scores are encouraged to contact LSI or ELS in order to contract with them for English proficiency classes.

Master of Music Therapy

Applicants are expected to have a bachelor’s degree and board certification in music therapy. Applicants who hold a degree in another area of music but who are not certified in music therapy are eligible to apply for the combined master’s/equivalency program. This program integrates undergraduate courses in music therapy required for certification with the master’s degree curriculum. Applicants who do not have at least 60 undergraduate credits in music will apply initially for the bachelor’s degree.

Students not obtaining these scores are encouraged to contact LSI or ELS in order to contract with them for English proficiency classes

An audition and interview may be scheduled after an application has been filed. If a telephone interview is required the applicant must submit an audition DVD for review by the Maryville music and music therapy faculty. The live or recorded audition must consist of two pieces in different styles in the applicant’s major performance medium and two standard songs sung by the applicant.

Applicants will be interviewed by Maryville’s music therapy faculty. In addition, faculty from the music department will participate in the interview process. Applicants will be expected to discuss their professional goals, their musical strengths and weaknesses, their philosophy of music therapy and the efforts they have made to advance their knowledge in music therapy.

The applicant’s goal statement should be a one to two page, typed document in which the applicant discusses his/her professional goals and reasons for pursuit of a graduate degree in music therapy. It is expected that this would be a well reasoned and professionally presented statement.

Master of Occupational Therapy 

1. Review will begin November 1st and will continue on a rolling basis thereafter.
2. Cumulative grade point average of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale).
3. Maryville recommends a strong grade point average in Mathematics and Science courses.
4. ACT composite score of 21; math and science sub scores of at least 20. ACT scores are not required if applicant has completed 30 or more college credits after receiving a high school diploma.
5. International students must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 563. Applicants who take the revised TOEFL must achieve a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 79 or higher (85 total for Health Professions and Education).  Students not obtaining these scores are encouraged to contact LSI or ELS in order to contract with them for English proficiency classes.
6. A resume providing evidence of participation and leadership roles in student organizations, clubs, activities or athletic teams.
7. Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or occupational therapist that speak to your potential success in the Master of Occupational Therapy Program.
8. The Maryville Office of Admissions reviews completed applications and forwards files to the Occupational Therapy Program.

The Occupational Therapy Program encourages and gives full consideration to all qualified applicants for admission. The Occupational Therapy Program will review the applications and admission files for all applicants who meet the admission requirements.

Acceptance into the Program as a first-year student assures the student a position in the professional portion of the Program if the student maintains satisfactory academic and professional behavior progress and is able to complete the Program within the required time frame. Eligible transfer students will be evaluated for admission on an individual basis. Transfer applicants who are eligible for admission and have completed general education, science, and psychology coursework may be admitted to the second year of the Program if space is available.

All occupational therapy students must be full-time students unless the occupational therapy faculty grants permission for part-time enrollment due to special circumstances. All students must complete the Program within five years of beginning the second year. A cumulative and semester GPA of 3.0 or greater must be maintained throughout the entirety of the program. Failure to achieve this minimum grade point average will result in the student being placed on probation. If a student is on probation and fails to meet the minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average for a second consecutive or nonconsecutive semester, they will be dismissed from the Program.

Students in the Program are expected to attain and maintain acceptable levels of professional behavior. Failure to meet this requirement may result in clinical fieldwork experiences being delayed and/or may result in the student being placed on probation or terminated from the Program. Students are expected to read and follow the policies outlined in the OT Student Handbook provided by the Program. 

Doctor of Physical Therapy

1. Review will begin November 1st and will continue on a rolling basis thereafter.
2. Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) from high school or ACT composite score of 24 with minimum Math and Science Reasoning subscores of 20 or SAT CR+M score range of 1090-1120 or SAT CR+M single score of 1110 (test scores are not required for students who have earned more than 30 credits after receiving a high school diploma or who have a bachelor’s degree).  All test values must be earned on the same exam.  Maryville recommends a strong grade point average in mathematics and science courses.
3. International students must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 573. Applicants must achieve a minimum sub-score of 24 in writing, 26 in speaking, 21 in reading comprehension, 18 in listening comprehension and a total sub-score of 89. Students not obtaining these scores are encouraged to contact ELS (www.els.com) in order to contract with them for English proficiency classes.
4. Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or physical therapist that speak to potential success in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program.
5. Documentation of a minimum of 20 hours of observation in physical therapy settings with a physical therapist. Observation in a variety of settings with more than 20 hours is recommended.  Observation is required in a minimum of two (2) different settings.  Observation hours must be completed by May 1st of senior year of high school for full admission into the program.
6. Students must submit evidence of participation and leadership roles in student organizations, clubs, activities, or athletic teams.
7. Students must have the equivalent of high school chemistry before entering the program.

The Maryville Office of Admissions reviews completed applications and, beginning November 1, forwards files of applicants who meet all admission requirements to the physical therapy faculty for review.

Acceptance into the program as a freshman assures the student a place in the professional portion of the program if the student maintains full-time enrollment with the required grade point average and completes specified courses with required grade. Physical Therapy students also earn an undergraduate degree in Health Science upon successfully completing the first four years of the program. All physical therapy students must be full-time students unless accepted under special circumstances and must maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.

At the present time, the Physical Therapy Program at Maryville is designed to be a freshmen entry program and is not accepting external transfer students. Current Maryville students can apply directly to the Physical Therapy Program and not through admissions.

Master of Science in Nursing

Adult/Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner, and Adult/Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner

3. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

7. An essay, typed and double-spaced, describing reasons for pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner and how you plan to use your education to affect patient outcomes.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)

Post-MSN

1. MS or MSN from an ACEN or CCNE accredited nursing program.
2. Proof of current board certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
3. Minimum of 3.25 GPA in Master’s program in nursing on a 4.0 scale.
4. Three letters of recommendation (suggest a minimum of one academic, one clinical).
5. Copy of curriculum vitae.
6. An essay, typed and double-spaced, addressing the following topics:  Describe three experiences that have prepared you for doctoral study and describe an issue in your current practice that would lend itself to scholarly inquiry.  This essay should be no longer than 3 pages.
7. An interview may be requested

BSN-DNP

1. A BSN from an ACEN/CCNE accredited nursing program.
2. A minimum of 3.25 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
3. Three letters of recommendation (suggest a minimum of one academic, one clinical).
4. Copy of curriculum vitae/resume.
5. An essay, typed and double spaced, addressing the following topics: reasons for pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner, how do you plan to use your education to affect patient outcomes and describe a potential clinical issue that would lend itself to scholarly inquiry.

Graduate Bridge/Early Access Programs

Business Administration

The early access program provides students the opportunity to accelerate their progress toward an M.B.A. Qualified undergraduate students may take 12 credit hours at the graduate level that count toward the undergraduate and graduate degree. Students must have completed 100 undergraduate credit hours (at least 20 credit hours at Maryville) and have a grade point average of 3.6.

Elementary Education

Qualified Maryville psychology or English majors may apply for admission to the elementary education bridge program during the fall of their junior year. Students complete a program of combined coursework in psychology or English and education and then, during the fifth year, complete the requirements for a Master of Arts in Education and for certification to teach the elementary grades (1-6) in the Missouri public schools. Early Childhood majors bridge into M.A.Ed. coursework in their fourth year.

Secondary Education Bridge

Qualified English, biology, chemistry, mathematics, or history majors may apply for admission to the Secondary Education Bridge during the fall of their junior year. Students complete a program of coursework in their major and selected education undergraduate and graduate courses prior to bachelor’s degree graduation. In their senior year, they apply for admission to the Master of Arts in Education/Secondary Teaching and Inquiry (a 14-month program) for certification to teach in grades 9-12.

Application for access to candidacy for this program does not guarantee admission to the MAE/STI program.

Actuarial Science

All Maryville University Actuarial Science students in good standing are eligible for early access to the graduate program in Actuarial Science. Qualified undergraduate students may take 12 credits hours at the graduate level that count toward both the undergraduate and graduate degree. Students must have completed 100 undergraduate credit hours (at least 20 credit hours at Maryville) and have a grade point average of 3.6 to be eligible for early admission.

Early access students are not required to take the GRE or TOEFL.

Music Therapy

Students can achieve early access to the Master of Music Therapy in their final year of preparation. Qualifying undergraduate and equivalency students are encouraged to take graduate level coursework as a bridge to the graduate degree.

Rehabilitation Counseling

Baccalaureate students who meet the requisite grade point average and coursework may be eligible for the bridge/early access program to the M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling at Maryville. The graduate Rehabilitation Counseling program is nationally accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education and provides the educational preparation for Missouri Licensing as a Professional Counselor and national certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor. Additional coursework is available for specialization in marriage and family therapy, and substance abuse. Social Work

Baccalaureate students majoring in Sociology or in the Psychology/Sociology double major are eligible to apply for early acceptance in the Master of Social Work program at Saint Louis University. See the academic course listing for Social Sciences for information on this program.

Strategic Communication and Leadership

Early Access Option - Maryville undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of 100 credit hours, with at least 20 credit hours from Maryville, and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.6 and/or have demonstrated significant academic ability in the major through the last two years of academic work may apply to take courses toward the Early Access Option. Students should consult with their academic adviser and the Graduate Director for more information. Early access students may earn up to 12 credit hours of coursework in the graduate Strategic Communication and Leadership program in consultation with the Graduate Director.
