ENGL 322 - American Realism and Modernism Credits: 3 This class will examine some of the major authors and literary movements in America from about 1870-1940. We’ll discuss the definitions and significances of Realism and Modernism, from the course title, but also related categories of Regionalism, Naturalism, Imagism, surrealism, and the movement known as the Harlem Renaissance We will read our works closely; consider how each is of its time, what it means in our time, as well as, potentially, what makes it timeless; compare the ways in which these works invent, maintain, and defy different literary conventions; and discuss how each of our authors have defined, redefined, and challenged notions of what both “American” and ”literature” mean for generations of readers.
