Admission Requirements for All Undergraduate Options

(Also see specific program option section for additional admission requirements.)

Application materials are available online at www.maryville.edu or through the Admissions Office.

The following minimum admission requirements must be met by all nursing students:

• Admission to Maryville University
• A cumulative high school or college GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0.
• ACT composite score of  23 (ACT scores not required for students having completed more than 24 college credits except for applicants to the Fast Track option).
• A TOEFL score of 550 with no subscore under 50 for students for whom English is a second language. Undergraduate TOEFL test takers after September 24, 2005, who take the revised TOEFL will be admitted into the Nursing program with a speaking sub-score of 26, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 85 or higher.
• Advanced placement in the basic baccalaureate nursing program is available for transfer students with college credit in nursing courses.  Science courses including Anatomy and Physiology I & II must have been completed within the last seven years of the anticipated start date.
• Documentation of health requirements, background checks and a urine drug screen must be acceptable prior to clinical coursework.

Applicants should be aware that in an effort to ensure the safety and welfare of patients, it is the policy of our affiliating agencies that all individuals who have contact with patients complete some or all the following:

• Missouri State Highway Patrol Criminal Background Check, Illinois State Police Background Check, other state Criminal Background Checks, FBI Background Check
  (if from states other than MO/IL)
• MO-DSS (Child Abuse/Neglect) - Missouri Department of Social Services - Children’s Division
• Office of Inspector General Disqualification List
• Family Care Safety Registry
• DHSS Employee Disqualification List
• National Sex Offender Registry

All of these must be done prior to clinical coursework. Affiliating agencies may refuse clinical placement based on the results of these screenings which will result in dismissal from the Nursing Program.

Courses in the Nursing program are measured in credit hours. Nursing courses use class, lab/modules, and clinical experience in meeting credit hour allocation. The ratio of credit hour to clock hour (minutes) per week of the semester is:

• credit hour: class clock hour 1:50 minutes
• credit hour: lab/module clock hour 1:180 minutes
• credit hour: clinical clock hour 1:240 minutes

To complete the program, students must complete successfully all courses required for the major, university core requirements, and electives to meet the graduation requirement of 128 semester hours.

Students will be required to complete standardized tests throughout the nursing curriculum and to achieve acceptable scores on these examinations. Students are required to maintain a 2.75 GPA throughout the program. In the last semester of the nursing curriculum, students will be required to attain a satisfactory score on a comprehensive exam in order to obtain approval to take the licensure examination.

In compliance with the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, (Chapter 335 of the Missouri Statutes, section 335.066), nursing program applicants should be aware that the Missouri State Board of Nursing may refuse to issue a license for specific reasons related to moral turpitude, intemperate use of alcohol or drugs, or conviction of a crime.

Health and Other Special Requirements

The following requirements must be met prior to participating in required clinicals:

• Physical Examination
• Documentation of Immunization or Titer Immunity
  • Measles/Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and acellular Pertusis (Tdap)
  • Polio series completed
  • Varicella titer or Varicella vaccinations
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine Series or Declination
  • Flu Vaccine annual
  • TB-Tuberculin PPD test (documented 2-step initially, then annual)
• Health insurance (copy of card required annually)
• Maintenance of CPR Certification-American Heart Association Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider required
• Urine Drug Screen (from the Maryville authorized lab)
• Criminal Record Background checks from Maryville University’s authorized agency and signed release to clinical sites (possible checks include: state criminal checks, disqualification lists, sex offender lists, social security number, address and alias)
• Fitting for a respiratory isolation device (i.e. N95 Mask) may be required by some clinical sites
• A few hospitals in Missouri now require nicotine screenings for all new employees.  Therefore, it is anticipated that students may be excluded from some clinical sites based upon their use of nicotine
