Maryville University, with its focus on student-centered learning in smaller classrooms, helps shape the values, attitudes and skills necessary to provide effective services to a diverse client base. The liberal arts foundation of a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Services degree at Maryville University develops within the student an appreciation of the broad influences and concerns that impact the individual. With this understanding of the total dimensions of the individual, Maryville University Rehabilitation Services graduates are prepared to be effective professionals.

Rehabilitation Services is part a growing program in the School of Health Professions. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Services, a student can continue their clinical and educational advancement at Maryville University by applying to the Master’s in Rehabilitation Counseling program.

As a graduate, students have the knowledge and experience necessary to work in a front line position of a community rehabilitation agency. The program curriculum focuses on a blend of course work and field experiences designed to provide a foundation in the purpose, process and skills of rehabilitation service delivery. Career opportunities for Rehabilitation Services graduates include: non-profit organizations, state and federal government, rehabilitation managers, vocational specialists, case managers, program managers, independent living specialists, protection and advocacy specialists, residential managers and private for profit companies.

The program objectives are as follows

1. Program graduates will demonstrate an understanding of the individual and society and how societal perspectives impact perspectives on disability.
2. Program graduates will demonstrate an understanding of the principles, philosophies, history, policies, laws, practices, and ethics related to the field of rehabilitation.
3. Program graduates will demonstrate the ability to use effective communication and helping skills.
4. Program graduates will demonstrate an understanding of and sensitivity to a range of disabilities including physical, psychiatric, developmental, with particular attention to how these impact independent living skills.
5.  Program graduates will demonstrate the ability to assist people with disabilities access vocational opportunities in the community by gaining knowledge and skills in job development, job placement and supported employment.
6. Program graduates will demonstrate the ability to provide effective case management services to the community
7. Program graduates will demonstrate their commitment to continued professional growth and development.

Health and Other Special Requirements

The following requirements must be met prior to participating in clinicals:

• Physical Examination
• Documentation of Immunization or Titer Immunity
  • Measles/Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) 
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria and Acellular Pertussis (Tdap)
  • Polio series completed
  • Varicella titer or Varicella vaccinations
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine Series or Declination
    (Students may not be able to go to certain fieldwork sites if they do not receive the vaccine)
  • Flu Vaccine recommended for Music Therapy
• TB-Tuberculin PPD Test (documented 2-step initially, then annual)
• Health Insurance (copy of card required annually)
• Urine Drug Screen (from the Maryville authorized lab)
• Criminal Record Background checks from Maryville University’s authorized agency and signed release to clinical sites (possible checks include:  state criminal checks, disqualification lists, sex offender lists, social security number, address, and alias).
• Any additional requirements that may arise

Early Access

Baccalaureate students who meet the requisite grade point average and coursework may be eligible for the bridge/early access program to the M.A. in Rehabilitation Counseling at Maryville.
