Undergraduate Programs
The Art & Design Programs support the University as an educational and cultural center within the Saint Louis community by offering courses of study combining liberal and professional learning. The B.F.A. and B.A. programs are designed to promote creative thinking, aesthetic understanding, and technical proficiency, along with a historical perspective and a strong liberal arts core. Program faculties share a close mentoring relationship with their students and combine pre-career advising, internships, and the cultivation of professional contacts with academic guidance.
Review of work by faculty and outside professionals is an integral part of the curriculum of Art & Design programs. In the first year of any Art & Design program, students participate in portfolio reviews at the end of each semester. These sessions provide students with an individual evaluation of their progress from a cross-section of the Art & Design faculty and are intended to define goals, areas of strength, and areas in need of improvement.
Program faculty and outside professionals review students at the sophomore level and above at the end of each semester. Graduating senior are required to take part in an end of year exhibit.
Students with high school art experience are encouraged to submit a portfolio to be considered for a merit scholarship. The portfolio should demonstrate creative ability, drawing skills, basic understanding of 2- and 3- dimensional design (line, texture, space, color, and movement), focus and range of aesthetic interests, craft and technical ability (please see Policies and Information )
Students without portfolios or adequate art experience will be accepted into their chosen Art & Design program, however, they must follow the same policies set for all first year Art & Design students:
- Successful end of the semester (fall and spring) portfolio reviews
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 (“B”) in freshman Art & Design foundation courses: ADAH 100, 150; ADSA 100, 101, 150, 151
Transfer students with prior art and design course work are requried to present a portfolio for evaluation. The portfolio should contain as much work as possible from each course for which they seek credit.
Maryville University’s Art & Design program is accredited by:
- National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD)
- Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA)
- National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
