The Chemistry major prepares students to enter the chemical industry, agriculture, the food industry, environmental protection, health sciences, energy, and government. A bachelors degree in chemistry also provides excellent pre-professional education for those seeking careers in chemistry, the health professions or law, particularly environmental regulatory law and patent law. Students with an undergraduate degree in chemistry, particularly with undergraduate research experience and a high grade point average are prepared to apply for graduate programs in chemistry, medical school, pharmacy school and other post-graduate educational opportunities. A minor is required for a B.S. in Chemistry. Participating in undergraduate research is strongly encouraged.

General Education Requirements:

  • One course in art, music, performance, or aesthetics
  • One additional course in English or in a foreign language
  • One elective in English, the arts, aesthetics, foreign language, humanities, philosophy, or religion
  • One course in American history or government
  • Two additional courses chosen from economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology
  • One philosophy course
  • Additional electives (2 courses selected from disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences)

Please Note:

Because upper-level chemistry courses may be offered only every other year, students are urged to consult their adviser in planning their curriculum.
