Data science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms.

The Bachelor of Science in Applied Statistics and Data Analytics with a minor in Business is a unique and innovative program that integrates computer skills and mathematical theory with practical applications in economics, finance and general business. This multidisciplinary program, co-sponsored with Maryville’s John E. Simon School of Business, enhances the employment opportunities of mathematically oriented students in a wide variety of fields in the world of business and finance.

Maryville Data science curriculum offers a wide range of core courses and electives  covering business, mathematics and statistics, and computer skills. Some of the courses are project based learning. Students completing the recommended business core courses will have completed the required courses for a minor in Business Administration.

When Harvard Business Review called Data Science “The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century” in 2012, the term became a buzzword, and is now often applied to business analytics. Graduates of this discipline are highly sought-after by employers throughout the economy.

General Education Requirements:


  • One course in art, music, performance, or aesthetics
  • One other course in English or in a foreign language
  • One course in philosophy
  • Two additional courses in English, art, aesthetics, foreign language, humanities, philosophy or religion
  • One course in science plus MATH 152  
  • One course in American history or government
  • Two courses in communication, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology

Additional Requirements:


  • Additional electives to reach a total of 48 credit hours.
