The certificate consists of four required courses which are taken over the course of a single semester.  The first three courses are taught online while the practicum course is conducted in-person.  Students enrolled in the practicum course are required to participate in 135 hours of clinical practice.  This practice is mentored by practicum faculty and is under the supervision of Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, other health care providers and community practitioners.  At the conclusion of the four course sequence, professional paramedics will have a greater understanding, as well as practical knowledge, of how they can enhance and provide service within their community.

The Community Paramedic certificate is designed to provide the student with professional development that enhances their skills and knowledge for caring for members of their community.  The Community Paramedic curriculum is based on the North Central EMS Institute Community Paramedic Curriculum, and is used with permission.  As such, the certificate has seven program goals:

  • The Community Paramedic will understand and analyze their role in the health care system.
  • The Community Paramedic will understand the social determinants of the health model.
  • The Community Paramedic will understand their role in public health and primary care.
  • The Community Paramedic will become culturally competent.
  • The Community Paramedic will understand their role within the community.
  • The Community Paramedic will understand the importance of balancing stress and wellness while ensuring personal safety.
