Master of Occupational Therapy, MOT (Post-baccalaureate)


The post-baccalaureate Master of Occupational Therapy degree is designed to prepare students as entry-level occupational therapy practitioners. Students who successfully complete the program are qualified to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam.

Admission Requirements

Early Direct Admission

Students entering Maryville as freshman may qualify for early admission to the post-baccalaureate Master of Occupational Therapy Program.  Priority for acceptance will be based on qualification scores and date of completed application.

Requirements for early direct admission include:

  • Review will begin November 1st and will continue on a rolling basis thereafter.
  • High school cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • International students must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 563. Applicants who take the revised TOEFL must achieve a speaking sub-score of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 79 or higher (85 total for Health Professions and Education).  Students not obtaining these scores are encouraged to contact LSI or ELS in order to contract with them for English proficiency classes.
  • Document participation and leadership roles in school activities, athletics, community activities, volunteer activities, and work experiences.
  • Submit 2 letters of recommendations that speak to the student’s potential for successfully completing a Master of Occupational Therapy program.

If a student is accepted for early direct admission they must meet the following requirements to maintain their position in an entering class:

  • Achieve minimum cumulative and semester GPAs of at least 3.0 throughout undergraduate coursework at Maryville.
  • Earn a grade of “C” or better in all prerequisite courses for the post-baccalaureate curriculum.
  • Complete and document at least 10 hours of observation of occupational therapy professionals each academic year. Students will have completed a minimum of 40 hours in at least 2 different practice areas prior to beginning the post-baccalaureate masters program.

Students must complete the following pre-requisites with a grade of “C” or better prior to beginning the post-baccalaureate masters program.

BIOL-101 - Human Anatomy and Physiology I  
BIOL-102 - Human Anatomy and Physiology II  
PSYC-101 - General Psychology  
PSYC-254 - Human Development through the Lifespan  
PSYC-321 - Abnormal Psychology  
SOSC-341 - Understanding Statistical Inference  
SOC-101 - Introduction to Sociology  
HEPR-108 - Medical Terminology  

Graduate Admission

To qualify for entry to the post-baccalaureate masters program applicants must:

  1. Have completed a baccalaureate degree must be completed by the end of the spring semester in which they submit their application, with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  2. Completed the following prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better. All pre-requisite courses must be completed by the end of the spring semester in which they submit their application.
    1. Human Anatomy & Physiology I
    2. Human Anatomy & Physiology II
    3. General Psychology
    4. Human Development Through Lifespan
    5. Abnormal Psychology
    6. Understanding Statistical Inference (Psychology or Math Statistics)
    7. Introduction to Sociology or Anthropology
    8. Medical Terminology
  3. Complete the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Maryville’s Institutional GRE code is 6399.  
  4. Submit an essay and two letters of recommendation.
  5. Complete and document at least 20 hours of observation with an occupational therapy practitioner(s).
  6. Document pertinent health related, volunteer/community, employment, internship, research and extracurricular activities.
  7. International students must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 563. Applicants who take the revised TOEFL must achieve a speaking sub-core of 23, writing sub-score of 20 and reading and listening scores of 21 or higher, and a combined score of 85 or higher. Students not obtaining these scores are encouraged to contact LSI or ELS in order to contract with them for English proficiency classes.
  8. Submit application through the Occupational Therapy Common Application System (OT-CAS). Application must be submitted December 15, 2017. Please note that the verification process can take from 2 – 4 weeks.
