Mathematics is an essential component of any liberal arts education, especially in this age of technology. Mathematicians are valued for their logic, rigor and analytic ability. They are viewed as capable of engaging in creative problem solving across a wide range of disciplines. Mathematical Science majors have a remarkably diverse set of choices for embarking on their careers.
At Maryville, the study of mathematics combines both practical and theoretical aspects. Along with the major course requirements, students can select additional coursework to focus on a major field of study in mathematics.
Students with a mathematics major can also elect a minor field of study. Recommended is a Data Science Minor or another possible option is a dual degree with High School Mathematics Education. (See a curriculum guide for recommended sequencing.)
Prospective applicants should have a solid background in mathematics. All students are required to complete the general education requirement in the mathematics program and the Retention & Advising Office administers the placement exams.
