Global Scholars Program

A Signature, Accelerated Academic Program Focused on Global Awareness

Maryville University offers undergraduate students the option of participating in the Global Scholars Program which is a group of students who commit to studying abroad three times during their undergraduate career and who plan to complete a minor (or second major) in international studies.  Students participating in this program can achieve their undergraduate degree in an accelerated form if they study abroad in the summer.  This program works best for students completing a major in the humanities and social sciences, but it can be added for students in many of Maryville’s other degree programs.

Academic and Co-Curricular Elements

  1. Major of Student’s Choosing + Minor in International Studies: Students agree to   major in a single discipline and to complete a minor in international studies.  Options for the primary major include communication, psychology, sociology, English, organizational leadership, liberal studies, criminal justice/criminology, history, and liberal studies (with concentrations in political science, or create-your-own concentration) . Other majors are also possible to do with the Global Scholars Program if they can be done with three study abroad experiences and if a minor in international studies can also be added.  Students may also be able to select International Studies as a second major.
  2. Study Abroad Details: Students will participate in the existing Oxford month-long summer study abroad experience run by Maryville University in  the summer after their first year. In addition, students will participate in two additional month-long summer study abroad or semester experiences. After the Oxford summer, students can select the programs that best fit their academic interests.
  3. Honors Program: Students in this program may also be admitted in the Honors Program.  We encourage Global Scholars to participate in the Honors Program because of the in-depth academic experience it provides and because it provides additional options for course scheduling on campus and abroad.
  4. Required GPA: Student must maintain a 3.3 GPA each year they are in the program.
  5. Time to completion of the Global Scholars Program depends on the specific academic programs selected.

Admission Requirements

  •   Students must earn a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their high school coursework to be eligible for the program. Students who wish to be considered who do not meet this minimum can request to still be considered for the program.
  •   Students must complete the University Application and check the box for “Global Scholars Program” to apply.

*Students who bring at least 14 transfer or AP credits into the University upon enrollment can make one of the summers abroad into a full semester abroad to enhance the abroad experience and increase the amount of time spent in an international location. Full semester programs may increase the time needed to complete the Global Scholars Program.
