The English major develops competence in the analysis, discussion and criticism of literature. Each student’s program of studies is developed in consultation with a faculty adviser. English majors who wish to teach grades 9-12 complete specific requirements in English. Professional certification is granted after completion of the M.A. in Education: Secondary Teaching and Inquiry. Qualified English majors also may apply in their junior year for admission to the Elementary Education 3/2 Bridge Program, leading to the M.A. in Education.

In addition to preparing students for teaching, the English major has proven to be excellent preparation for law and for other fields that require clear thinking and writing.

General Education Requirements:

  • One course in art, music, performance, or aesthetics
  • An additional course in English or a foreign language
  • One course in Philosophy
  • One other course in English, art, aesthetics, foreign language, humanities, philosophy or religion
  • One course in American history or government
  • Two courses selected from two of the following disciplines: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology and sociology
  • One science course
  • One additional course in science or mathematics
  • Two additional courses approved by the adviser and selected from disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences

Requirements for the Major:

A minimum of 33 credit hours, at least 27 of which must be from courses at the 300-level or above. (ENGL 101 and ENGL 104 may not be counted toward the Major.)

For the other courses, studies may range widely in the literatures of America, England, the Continent and non-Western cultures. These courses aim to enrich the student’s conceptual world and to sharpen aesthetic sensibilities. Since these courses include discussion and the writing of essays, they also help students become more articulate. The English faculty strongly recommend that the English major select at least one upper division writing course. Internships are encouraged. A minor is required for a B.A. in English.
