The elementary/early childhood education program at Maryville prepares students to be certified in both early childhood (Birth-grade 3) and elementary education (Grades 1-6). Classes, field experiences, an early childhood area of concentration and a general education contribute to a broad-based elementary and early childhood teacher preparation program. Two options are available for the dual certification program: B.A. in elementary/early childhood, and a 3/2 program in elementary/early childhood education. Both options involve extensive experiences in partner schools with the 3/2 program allowing for more indepth study of early childhood issues.
Maryville’s School of Education has been recognized for its work at the elementary and early childhood level by the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, various local school districts and as part of John Goodlad’s National Network for Educational Renewal. In addition, it has a longstanding history with the St. Louis Public Schools early childhood magnet school program.
