Characteristics of a Maryville Baccalaureate Graduate

Programs of Study and General Education

All undergraduate programs at Maryville University are designed to ensure that graduates acquire the skills and knowledge expected of a liberally educated person as well as in-depth knowledge in a chosen major field of study.

A liberal education includes study in the following areas:

  • Humanities including English, foreign languages, philosophy and religious studies
  • Fine and Performing Arts including studio art, art history, graphic design, interior design, music, music history and performance
  • Social Sciences including history, economics, geography, political science, psychology and sociology
  • Natural Sciences including biology, chemistry, environmental science, physics and science

Communication Skills

The graduate presents ideas clearly in a variety of formats, such as written documents, oral presentations and artistic works.

Critical Thinking Skills

The graduate analyzes, interprets and synthesizes information, using principles of critical thinking and is able to evaluate his or her own thinking processes.

Technological Skills

The graduate has basic technological skills in communication and research and advanced technological skills appropriate to a major discipline.

Research And Data Analysis Skills

The graduate is able to use research skills in planning, implementing and interpreting studies in the major field.

Cultural Competence

The graduate understands the complex dimensions of culture and is able to interact with people of different cultures.

Global Perspective

The graduate demonstrates an understanding of the rich contributions of the diverse cultures of the world.

Social Awareness And Responsible Citizenship

The graduate identifies, evaluates and understands issues of social justice and is aware of the importance of active involvement in professional, community, religious, cultural and political organizations.
