ENGL 124 - AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE

Credits: Three
Prerequisite: ENGL 101
This course will closely examine works by
African-American writers in order to explore what
they say about language and literacy, race and
ethnicity, history and contemporary life; what it
means to be American;, and even what it means to
be human.  We will look at a wide range of
materials–from folktales to film, song lyrics to
sermons, slave narratives to Pulitzer
Prize-winning plays and novels–in order to
expand upon notions of what our title’s three
terms, “African,” “American,” and “literature”
may mean.
Cross-listed: ENGL/HUM 124/324
