SPLP 590 - Language and Literacy for Speech Language Pathology

Credits: 3
This course will focus on language and literacy development and the role of the speech-language pathologist in literacy assessment and intervention. These roles and responsibilities will include but are not limited to fostering literacy development, identifying patterns of literacy development and support needs via various robust assessment procedures, and providing literacy intervention that aligns with a child’s zone of proximal development. Beyond children who primarily access inclusive educational settings, this course will also address tenets of high-quality literacy instruction for children with complex communication needs. Course content will embed current topics and trends at the intersections of the fields of speech-language pathology and literacy research including complex discussions of dyslexia, identity representation in literacy curricula, materials, and resources, the construct of the “struggling reader,” bi/multilingual literacy development, etc. Informed clinical decision-making and critical examination of evidence-based practices and scholarly research will be threaded throughout discussions, assignments, and content during the semester.
Prerequisite: SPLP-520 and SPLP-560
