COMM 242 - FILM STUDIES: CRITICISM & APPRECIATION

Credits: Three
This course provides an overview of critical approaches to film, from both theoretical and technical perspectives. The written assignments, readings, and discussions will focus primarily on how film constructs and intervenes in the way we understand the world. We will emphasize why we do or do not like the films and what they have to teach us about the time period from which they come and from which we now view them. The first half of the course will involve the physical construction of a film (e.g. as an industry, in terms of lighting, editing, etc.), and the second half will be spent on film as culture.
