The John E. Simon School of Business is named after the late St. Louis businessman, philanthropist and Maryville trustee emeritus. The School offers a variety of undergraduate programs leading to baccalaureate degrees as well as the Master of Business Administration.
The mission of the School of Business is to develop leaders and managers for profit and nonprofit organizations. Its curriculum provides students with opportunities to broaden their perspectives, to develop their critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills and to enhance their technological skills. The curriculum seeks to achieve a balance between theory and practice. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and other business practitioners participate in the continual improvement and testing of the relevance of the content and methods of instruction. The School strives to create an environment for innovation, lifelong learning, community service and integrity.
An important component of the mission is to build significant relationships with corporations within Maryville Centre and throughout the St. Louis region. These relationships provide professional expertise and internship opportunities for our students and are a model of collegiate/corporate cooperation. As the business environment becomes increasingly complex and global, specialties of business become more interdisciplinary. Education for this changing world must emphasize grounding in liberal arts and business fundamentals to allow adaptability for the future. Graduate Programs
A Master of Business Administration is offered within the John E. Simon School of Business. For entrance requirements, see the section on Graduate Admissions. The MBA program blends academic study with professional experience in a curriculum that allows the student to apply classroom concepts to current employment activities. The student’s professional position serves as a laboratory where management theory may be used to solve concrete problems in the student’s field.
The MBA is a professional degree with emphasis on management theory and techniques. Students develop the appropriate skills to perform traditional managerial functions. The program also emphasizes leadership flexibility that will enable managers of the future to respond to a rapidly changing business environment.
Early Access Program
The early access program provides students the opportunity to accelerate their progress toward an MBA. Qualified undergraduate students may take 12 credit hours at the graduate level that count toward the undergraduate and graduate degree. Students must have completed 100 undergraduate credit hours (at least 20 credit hours at Maryville) and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.6.
Certificates in Graduate Studies
A 15-hour program requiring four area courses, and a final course: Innovative Challenges in the 21st Century. Certificates available are:

- Marketing
These certificate programs are available to students with a master’s or doctoral degree in any discipline. Students who do not have the necessary prerequisites may be required to take additional classes (beyond the 15 credit hours).
Students who have taken an area course previously will be allowed to replace it with another course or a special studies course in that area. In a special studies course, they will work with a full-time faculty member who teaches in the area and be directed through readings and research to gain a current comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.
The certificate programs will rely on individualized mentoring by the School of Business faculty to ensure that students possess the necessary background in their area of choice. Students will be included in the graduate-level elective courses that fulfill the requirements of their certificate program.
