The International Studies minor in the College of Arts and Sciences is intended to give the student a fundamental level of intercultural competence. This requires knowledge of both language and culture, integrated with an understanding of the principles of intercultural communication. The minor requires both foreign language study and study abroad.

Required components of the minor (18+ credit hours)

  1. Language study - (one class must be at intermediate level) 9-10 credits
  2. Language specific culture/literature 3–4 credits
  3. Intercultural Studies/communication 3–4 credits
  4. One upper-division course with a multicultural perspective. 3–4 credits
  5. Study abroad for at least one semester
  1. Language skills must be demonstrated at the intermediate level in one language. A semester each of several languages will not fulfill this requirement. The language credits may be taken at Maryville or at a site abroad. Transfer credits will be evaluated in the customary manner. A student may bring in AP or CLEP credits from high school or transfer credits from another post-secondary institution. A student who demonstrates second language skills at the intermediate level without formal college-level coursework will be required to complete at least 18 credits in the other components of this minor.

  2. The culture/literature class must be related to the target  language. It may be in literature, history or philosophy. If it is a literature class, it may be in the target language or in translation.

This minor is intentionally made flexible so that it may serve students who wish to take most of it at Maryville, yet it also will serve students who take some or the major part of it abroad.

One component must be taken abroad.
