Legal Studies, B.A. and a concentration in Law and Society

The Legal Studies major with a Law and Society concentration is an interdisciplinary program focusing on a broad understanding of issues related to our world today. Courses within the curriculum explore philosophic, political, literary, economic, historical, sociological, criminal, ethical, scientific and religious issues that are central to an understanding of law and legal institutions in society. The curriculum also provides an excellent background for students interested in law school, as well as the following career possibilities: community organizer, corrections administration, criminal forensics, labor organizer, law enforcement, probation officer, victim advocate, activist/researcher/lobbyist in areas such as civil/human rights, environmental issues, health issues, hunger and homelessness, peace and justice, and public policy.

The program will introduce the student to the study of law,religion, literature, sociology, criminal justice and psychology, how they are interconnected, and how they can help us understand the relationships between law and human behavior and the role of law in society. Globalization, the expansion of worldwide markets, and instant universal communication require today’s graduates to be increasingly international in outlook.

With a degree in Legal Studies with Law and Society concentration from Maryville University, students prepare for careers with both local and global implications. Students will also be prepared to continue their education in any field related to law. In addition to the general education courses required to obtain a Legal Studies degree from Maryville University, the program requires 36 credit hours including a minor complementary to the concentration of Legal Studies. The last 30 hours must be completed in residency and 24 hours toward the major are also to be completed in residence. Please note that this major neither certifies the student as a paralegal nor enables a person to practice law or give legal advice.
