Graphic Design, B.A.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Programs

The Graphic Design program prepares students for the demanding, ever-changing state of the visual communication arts. The successful graphic designer is able to bring creative, intellectual and technical expertise to diverse business environments, including firms involved in publishing, promotion and advertising, package and retail.

The B.A. in Graphic Design is a liberal arts degree and as such, reduces the curricular concentration in graphic design study in order to allow time for pursuit of a second strong academic interest. The B.A. is an appropriate choice for a student considering a double major or a minor in a complementary discipline such as writing or business.

General Education Requirements:

  • One course in music, music history or aesthetics
  • One additional course in English or a course in foreign language
  • One course in philosophy
  • Two additional courses in art history, studio art, English, humanities, philosophy, religion or music
  • One course in psychology
  • One course in history or government
  • One other course in economics, geography, history, political science or sociology
  • One course in science
  • One additional course in science or mathematics
  • Two elective courses from any discipline within the College of Arts and Sciences except ADXX-listed courses

Required Courses:

The Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design is a liberal arts, undergraduate course of study and consists of 128 credit hours, 48 of which are in art and design foundations, graphic design and art history. Requirements for a minor also must be completed for the B.A. (See a curriculum guide for recommended sequencing.)

Please Note:

Several minors make strong combinations with the B.A. in Graphic Design, including communication (15 credits), English or writing (12 credits), psychology (21 credits) or studio art (24 credits).

Of the 128 credits required for this program, a minimum of 48 credit hours must be completed at the upper-division level, and the last 30 credit hours must be taken at Maryville to satisfy requirements for graduation.
