Interactive Design, B.F.A.

The Interactive Design B.F.A. program prepares students for professions that create or implement interactive media. Graduates will meet the growing demand placed on the graphic design, advertising and marketing industries for designers with advanced expertise in the visual, creative and technological components of interactive media. The program incorporates graphic and interactive design (multimedia production and scripting, web design, animation, video production, motion graphics, sound and 3-D modeling) to primarily focus on the production of rich digital applications for education, business, and entertainment.

The B.F.A. is an intensely focused professional degree structured to facilitate development of a mature, diverse and competitive portfolio. It prepares students for full participation in the professional interactive design community. The interactive design curriculum is sequential in nature.

General Education Requirements:


  • One course in music, music appreciation, music history, or aesthetics.
    (Recommended: MUS 101 Music Theory I or MUS 106 Music Appreciation I)
  • One additional English or foreign language.
    (Recommended Courses: ENG 118 Fable to Film or ENG 207 Creative Writing)
  • One course in philosophy
  • One course in art history, studio art, English, humanities, philosophy, religion, or music
  • One course in psychology
  • One course in history or government
  • One other course in economics, geography, history, political science, or sociology
  • One course in science.
    (Recommended Courses: PHYS120 Physics of Light and Color)
  • One additional course in science or mathematics
  • One elective course from any discipline within the School of Liberal Arts and Professional Programs except ADXX-listed courses.

Required Courses:


The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interactive Design is a professional undergraduate course of study and consists of 132 credit hours, 90 of which are in art & design foundations, graphic and interactive design, art/design history, and interactive design workshops. (See curriculum guide for recommended sequencing.)

Students in the B.F.A. program must complete an intensive art and design foundation program before they proceed into the major. When students have completed their second semester of interactive design course work at Maryville, a written assessment of their progress will follow the semester portfolio review. This evaluation will be produced by the interactive and graphic design faculty and will address students’ successes as well as their need for improvement in competencies specific to interactive design.

Please Note:


Of the 132 credits required for the this program, one half of the required major courses and the last 30 credit hours must be taken at Maryville to satisfy requirements for graduation.
