Studio Art, B.A.

The B.A. in Studio Art is intended for students wishing a broad exposure to studio art and art history in combination with studies in a minor area of concentration. Several minors work well as pre-professional tracks towards graduate education in such fields as: Art Therapy (Psychology), Arts Administration (Business), and Medical Illustration (Biology).

The Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art is a liberal arts, undergraduate course of study and consists of 128 credit hours, 48 of which are in art history and studio art.

The B.A. in Studio Art permits students to earn a minor in another program in the College of Arts and Sciences or the John E. Simon School of Business. (See a curriculum guide for recommended sequencing)

General Education Requirements for B.A. in Studio Art:


  • One course in music, music history, or aesthetics 3
  • One additional course in English or in a foreign language 3
  • One course in philosophy 3
  • Two additional courses in art history, English, humanities, philosophy, religion, or music 6
  • One course in history or government 3
  • One course in psychology 3
  • One additional course in economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology 3
  • One science course 3
  • One additional course in science or mathematics 3
  • Two elective courses from any discipline within the College of Arts and Sciences except ADXX-listed courses. 6

Please Note:


Of the 128 credits required for this program, a minimum of 48 credit hours must be completed at the upper-division level, and the last 30 credit hours must be taken in residence at Maryville to satisfy requirements for graduation.
