Environmental Science, B.S.


The Environmental Science major provides students with a broad base of knowledge and skills necessary to understand the interactions between people and their environment. This major encompasses several disciplines and allows the student to select a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science.

An integrative philosophy is woven through the course of study that involves opportunity for internship in related environmental employment. Capstone courses bring students together in their final year. Goals of Students in the Program:

  1. To understand the interactions between living things and the physical environment.
  2. To appreciate the impact of human societies on the earth.
  3. To understand the biogeochemical cycles and how they affect global changes.
  4. To see the linkages between human choices and environmental effects.
  5. To appreciate the need for environmental ethics and to embrace a philosophy of sustainability relative to natural resources.

General Education Requirements:


  • One course in art, music, performance, or aesthetics
  • One additional course in English or foreign language
  • One elective chosen from English, the arts, aesthetics, foreign language, humanities, philosophy, or religion
  • American History or Government
  • One philosophy course
  • Two courses chosen from two of the following disciplines: economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, or sociology
  • Two courses selected from disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences
    (with adviser approval)

Please Note:


No minor is required for a B.S. in Environmental Science.
