Mathematics Education, B.S. leading to the M.A. in Education

(with an area of concentration in Education / Leading to Mathematics teaching certification)

Maryville students who wish to teach mathematics in grades 9-12 complete the mathematics major with specific mathematics certification requirements and complete the M.A. in Education in their fifth year. A student may enter this program while an undergraduate at Maryville University through the Early Access Program. See the School of Education: Secondary Education Bridge  section for details.

General Education requirements:


  • One course in art, music, performance or aesthetics
  • One multicultural course in English (i.e., ENGL 357) or foreign language
  • One course in philosophy
  • Two other electives chosen from English, the arts, aesthetics, foreign language, humanities, philosophy, or religion
  • One course in American history or government
  • Two electives chosen from economics, geography, history, political science, psychology or sociology
  • Two courses in science (one BIOL and one physical science)

Education Minor for Secondary Teaching


The Education Minor provides early access to the M.A. in Education Secondary Teaching and Inquiry (MA/STI). Students must maintain an overall 2.75 GPA and a 3.0 GPA in the content area. Students enrolled in this program are advised by a School of Education adviser and Arts & Sciences adviser in their content area. Candidates apply for the Master’s program in the fall of their senior year. Early access does not guarantee acceptance into the MA/STI. Acceptance into the MA/STI requires 3.0 GPA, Praxis II passing score, graduate school application, and successful interview with the mentoring team.
