Communication and English Dual Major, B.A.
The dual major in Communication and English is designed for students who are interested in developing the skills of a professional writer as well as the liberal arts foundation in literature, creative writing, and critical analysis that prepares them for graduate work. This dual major offers students a broad curriculum that builds skills in writing, research, and critical thinking. Students explore the world’s great literary traditions while developing 21st century skills that prepare them for careers as writers who understand how to use the tools of technology effectively.
Students in our Communication/English program have many opportunities to put their coursework to use, including being a member of the Maryville Pawprint online student newsletter reporting and editing staff or the Maryville Magnolia literary magazine editorial board. All students in the program complete an internship, with undergraduate interns working at many of the top corporations, agencies, radio stations, and not-for-profit groups in the St. Louis area.
Students also have the opportunity to study Communication or English abroad during short semester break trips, extended summer programs, or a semester at Oxford University in England. Credits earned in study aboard apply directly to the student’s major and/or minor elective courses.
