General Studies, B.A. with a Concentration in Healthcare

The Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with a Concentration in Healthcare degree is designed to provide the student with a foundation in healthcare and healthcare services. This degree serves as a bridge to numerous graduate degree programs and prepares you for employment in areas not requiring a clinically based baccalaureate degrees.
There are two tracks:
- Pre-licensure nursing (on-campus only)
- General Studies (online only) with two options for degree completion that focus on gerontology or mental health (online only).
Students in both tracks must take the following General Education elective courses in addition to Health Science (or Nursing) Core and Healthcare Core courses. Refer to detailed information below.

Pre-Licensure Nursing (Part-time Evening)
The pre-licensure nursing track prepares students to apply to the part- time weekend and evening Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) degree program, which is on-ground only. Students must meet the Maryville University general education requirements in addition to the required nursing core classes – a minimum of 65 credit hours must be complete prior to being considered for admission to the BSN program. All science courses must be completed within seven years of acceptance to the program and the start of nursing coursework.
Consideration for admission to the on-ground Bachelor of Science Nursing degree requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 (cumulative, Maryville, and nursing core).
Students, who upon completion of the requirements listed below and are not admitted to the BSN program, may transition to the online General Studies Healthcare Concentration track and may choose from two different areas of professional exploration: Gerontology and Mental Health (See details below) or choose another degree completion option.

Concentration in Healthcare (Online only)
The Online Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with a Concentration in Healthcare degree is designed for students interested in pursuing healthcare related careers that are non-clinically focused. The program provides a foundation in the area of health sciences, the healthcare industry and healthcare services. Students are required to take a total of 110 credit hours of general education, health science and healthcare core courses.
Students will be required to complete an additional 18 credt hours by choosing an area of professional exploration: Gerontology or Mental Health, as described below.

Students then have the opportunity to choose from two different areas of professional exploration and complete an additional 18 credit hours as described below.
Gerontology
Explore the changing face of aging in a multicultural society. Topics include:physiological adaptation, exercise and rehabilitation, and Alzheimer’s and dementia care. Students are required to take the following 6 courses:
Mental Health
Examine multiple perspectives of disability and mental illness in our society. Topics include: medical aspects of disability, the psychology of stress and health, and an introduction to positive psychology. Students are required to take 6 of the following courses:
