This program is designed for practicing teachers in middle and high school levels in all content areas. Teachers in the program will develop an understanding of literacy development as it relates to students in 6th - 12th grade. Courses will focus on researched-based effective strategies to help students access and think critically about text-based content in all areas of learning. Participants will build the capacity to support students with a variety of literacy proficiency. At the completion candidates will be prepared to serve as literacy/content coaches, to provide intervention for students, and to provide coaching for teachers in designing and facilitating learning experiences for struggling readers.
Note: If the students are interested in applying for a Missouri Reading Specialist Certification, they will need to complete two additional practicum courses.
The following courses are required to be eligible for certification in the State of Missouri as a Reading Specialist. These courses may have been met during undergraduate coursework. If not, candidates will be required to complete these courses in addition to the above required courses to be eligible for Reading Specialist certification.
