The Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with a Concentration in Healthcare degree is designed to provide the student with a foundation in healthcare and healthcare services. This degree serves as a bridge to numerous graduate degree programs and prepares you for employment in areas not requiring a clinically based baccalaureate degrees.
There are two tracks:
- Pre-licensure nursing (on-campus only)
- General Studies (online only) with options for degree completion that focus on a variety of healthcare topics, including gerontology, mental health, exercise science and speech & communication disorders (online only).
Students in both tracks must take the following General Education elective courses in addition to Health Science (or Nursing) Core and Healthcare Core courses. Refer to detailed information below.

MCORE
(36 credits) Social Discovery
Courses in this area will focus on the study of human behavior, its ethical and moral dimension, human societies, the requirements of civility, and social science theory and practice which undergirds such study. (6 credits) Civic Discovery
Courses in this area will focus on the study and purpose of human institutions and systems, the historical and contemporary forms of power, authority, governance and citizenship, and the distribution and use of resources. (6 credits) Cultural Discovery
Courses in this area will focus on significant systems of thought, contributions made by significant historical and cultural figures, philosophical and historical movements, and ideas which have shaped history, culture and human institutions. (6 credits) Creative Discovery
Courses in this area will focus on the nature of the creative imagination, the philosophical underpinnings of human creativity in music, the visual arts, the narrative arts, and philosophical invention, and innovation in a variety of human endeavors. (9 credits) Scientific Discovery
Courses in this area will focus on the nature of scientific reasoning, the history and variety of the scientific endeavor in culture, and the nature of scientific process and exploration. (9 credits) Other Requirements
(21 credits) Pre-Licensure Nursing (Part-time Evening)
The pre-licensure nursing track prepares students to apply to the part- time weekend and evening Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) degree program, which is on-ground only. Students must meet the Maryville University general education requirements in addition to the required nursing core classes – a minimum of 65 credit hours must be complete prior to being considered for admission to the BSN program. All science courses must be completed within seven years of acceptance to the program and the start of nursing coursework. Consideration for admission to the on-ground Bachelor of Science Nursing degree requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 (cumulative, Maryville, and nursing core). Students, who upon completion of the requirements listed below and are not admitted to the BSN program, may transition to the online General Studies Healthcare Concentration track or choose another degree completion option. (6 courses) Concentration in Healthcare (Online only)
The Online Bachelor of Arts in General Studies with a Concentration in Healthcare degree is designed for students interested in pursuing healthcare related careers that are non-clinically focused. The program provides a foundation in the area of health sciences, the healthcare industry and healthcare services. Students are required to take a total of 110 credit hours of general education, health science and healthcare core courses and a 16-week/3-credit capstone course (HCPM 490). Students will be required to complete an additional 18 credit hours of elective courses from a variety of healthcare profession disciplines, including: - Gerontology
- Mental Health
- Exercise Science
- Communication Disorders
Health Science Core
(20 credits) Healthcare Core
(30 credits) Professional Exploration General Studies with a Concentration in Healthcare
(18 credits) Students then have the opportunity to select courses from any of four (4) different healthcare disciplines and complete an additional 18 credit hours as described below. Students may take courses from any or all of these disciplines. At least three (3) courses must be from the 300-400 level. Psychology/Rehabilitation Services
