The Human Resource Management program at Maryville University is aligned with the competencies and Human Resource content areas of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Students will gain the business, leadership, and interpersonal skills, as well as the HR expertise needed to work effectively with diverse human resources in a variety of organizational settings. Students will learn how to apply modern HR principles and technology to facilitate talent recruitment and development to meet the strategic goals of an organization. The coursework includes current issues, trends, and technology relevant to the field of human resources, and emphasizes the effective management of an organization’s employees.

 

Students will complete the required set of business core courses (including Finance, Business Law, Marketing, and Management) as well as the specific requirements for a Human Resource Management major to ensure they have the business and human resource knowledge and skills necessary to launch a career, and succeed, in the field of human resource management. Potential career options include Human Resources Manager, Compensation/Benefits Manager, Training and Development Manager, Talent Acquisition Coordinator in such fields as Healthcare, Finance, Technology, Building and Construction, and Government among others.

Program Outcomes: 

A graduate of Maryville University with a major in Human Resources Management should be able to:

  • Synthesize core business knowledge and practices with HR-specific theory and practices in a diverse, technologically adept, global environment. 
  • Analyze and communicate the costs and benefits of mergers and acquisitions, re-structuring, layoffs, early retirements, and strategic growth plans.     
  • Analyze organizational needs, conduct job analyses, and develop talent recruitment strategies and processes to support organizational goals.
  • Conduct data analyses and use key findings to make decisions regarding change management, talent management and development, and compensation and benefits.
  • Create policies and procedures in accordance with appropriate HR legal and ethical standards.   
  • Articulate, orally and in writing, the unique value contributed by various functions of human resources to organizational performance.
 

 The BS in Human Resources Management is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP).

Social Discovery


Courses in this area will focus on the study of human behavior, its ethical and moral dimension, human societies, the requirements of civility, and social science theory and practice which undergirds such study.

(6 credits)

Civic Discovery


Courses in this area will focus on the study and purpose of human institutions and systems, the historical and contemporary forms of power, authority, governance and citizenship, and the distribution and use of resources.

Cultural Discovery


Courses in this area will focus on significant systems of thought, contributions made by significant historical and cultural figures, philosophical and historical movements, and ideas which have shaped history, culture and human institutions.

Creative Discovery


Courses in this area will focus on the nature of the creative imagination, the philosophical underpinnings of human creativity in music, the visual arts, the narrative arts, and philosophical invention, and innovation in a variety of human endeavors.

Scientific Discovery


Courses in this area will focus on the nature of scientific reasoning, the history and variety of the scientific endeavor in culture, and the nature of scientific process and exploration.

Major Requirements

For courses that count toward the major, minor, or business core, students must obtain a grade of C- or better.

Graduation Requirements - MCORE


  • 120 credit hours minimum
  • Last 30 hours of the degree taken in residency
  • A minimum of half the major credit hours in residency
  • A minimum of half the minor credit hours in residency
  • ​60 credit hours must be completed at a 4-year institution
