The Accounting program gives students an understanding of the functions of accounting, the underlying principles and concepts of accounting theory and the application of these principles to accounting problems and situations. The program focuses on building technical competence, analytical abilities, communication and interpersonal skills and cultural awareness, while providing a balance of accounting, business administration and a strong liberal arts education.

Completion of the Accounting degree opens opportunities in traditional areas such as assurance and tax services and new growth areas including environmental accounting, forensic accounting, international accounting and information technology services. The Accounting curriculum prepares students for careers in auditing, corporate accounting, consulting, governmental and nonprofit organizations, and taxation, and offers adequate coursework for those students planning to sit for professional examinations, such as the CPA and CMA examinations.

A total of 31 credits is required.

Business Core Requirement

All majors in the School of Business must complete a business core of 33-36 credit hours.

Note:

All majors in the School of Business must take a minimum of MATH 117 College Algebra.

Accounting Major Optional Emphases

Accounting students might also be interested in furthering their accounting coursework in the areas of auditing and accounting for entrepreneurs. Students have the option to take an additional nine hours of specified elective courses in these two areas of emphases:

  • The Audit Emphasis includes courses that concentrate on internal auditing, IT auditing, IT security, and cyber forensics.
  • The Accounting for Entrepreneurs Emphasis focuses on the needs of the small business owner including entity selection, taxation issues, accounting software, and performance management.

Students interested in an accounting emphasis should contact their adviser for specific requirements and direction.

CPA Examination Eligibility

To be eligible to sit for the CPA Examination in Missouri and many other states, candidates are required to complete 150 credit hours of college level course work. Maryville offers several approaches to satisfy this requirement. One approach is the Early Access to the MBA Program, which allows a transition into the University’s MBA Program during the senior year. A second way to meet the 150-hour requirement is to obtain degrees in both accounting and accounting information systems. Further, students may focus on other disciplines outside the field of accounting. Students should contact their adviser for more information and guidance. For additional information regarding the CPA exam, go to www.cpa-exam.org.
