Organizational Leadership, M.A.

The Maryville Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership is an interdisciplinary program that integrates theory and practical knowledge from disciplines in the social sciences, communication, business, and humanities. The program focuses on the human side of organizations and prepares individuals for leadership positions in corporate, government, not-for-profit, and community organizations.

The program is designed for individuals who wish to acquire professional skills that will enhance their leadership effectiveness and advance in their current organizations and for those who are seeking a new career in one of the many job growth areas in organizational leadership. More specifically, the program is designed for:

  • Professionals from a wide variety of professional backgrounds seeking to develop advanced leadership and organizational skills to further their careers in one of the many fast growing areas of organizational leadership.
  • Recent college graduates as well as a limited number of undergraduates who qualify for early access into the program interested in developing knowledge of organizational leadership and developing skills that will help them gain entry into one of the many fast growing areas of organizational leadership.


Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership

The College of Arts and Sciences at Maryville University offers a 36 credit hour program (12 courses) leading to the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. Advanced undergraduate students may also be eligible for the bridge program   that allows them to earn master’s credit for advanced undergraduate senior-level classes.

Program Features:

Flexibility - With flexible scheduling that combines on-line and face-to-face instruction in the evenings and on weekends, the program is designed to meet the needs of both the working professional and the recent college graduate.

Integration of Theory and Practical Application - The program emphasizes the application of organizational and leadership theories and methodologies to professional practice. Students learn how to apply evidence-based decision making practices to solve organizational problems and address critical issues, including the assessment, hiring, and evaluation of personnel, conflict management and negotiation, quality control analysis and program evaluation, and strategic planning and organizational development.

Leadership Skill Development -Students develop the skills necessary to effectively manage and influence people. These skills include communication skills, decision making skills, interpersonal skills, ethical and contingent leadership skills, persuasive skills, and a comprehensive understanding of interpersonal and intergroup dynamics.

Customized  Focus - The program provides tailored learning experiences to meet individual career goals. Research projects and elective courses can be tailored for specific career objectives.

Internships - Practica and internships provide students with opportunities for practical experiences and resume building to enhance competitiveness in the job market.

Ethical Leadership Emphasis - The coursework in the curriculum is designed to develop and strengthen ethical, socially responsible values and decision making.

Careers in Organizational Leadership

Graduates will be uniquely prepared for entry or advancement in one of the many fast growing areas of organizational leadership, including the following:

  • Social and Community Service Management
  • Business and Administrative Service Management
  • Organizational Analysis and Development
  • Strategic Planning
  • Human Resources
  • Recruitment and Training

Open Electives (6 credits)


Selected in consultation with faculty adviser:

  • Any additional 3-6 credit hours of organizational electives
  • Any of the graduate level communication courses
  • Up to 6 credit hours from the following business courses (or other approved business course):
