Undergraduate Admission Requirements


Admission Requirements


How to Apply

To complete the Maryville application process, the undergraduate applicant must submit the following:

  1. Application for admission
  2. Official copy of high school transcript or GED/HiSet score.  
  3. Official transcripts  from each college or university previously attended.
  4. Additional documentation as specified by Maryville University academic programs.

Maryville University operates a rolling admission with the exception of select academic programs, which may have application priority dates.

Freshman Applicants

Prospective students are encouraged to visit the campus.  To schedule a visit or register for a campus visit program, visit www.maryville.edu/visit

Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission, applicants should have:

  1. A high school diploma with a minimum of 22 units of credit including four units of English, three units of mathematics, three units of science, three units of social sciences (social studies), and three additional units in any of the above areas or in a foreign language.
  2. A high school grade point average of at least 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
  3. Applicants who do not meet the criteria listed above will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may be asked to submit a personal statement before an admission decision is made. 

Required High School Coursework for full admission consideration:

  • 4 years of English
  • 3 years of History or Social Science
  • 3 years of Math, which can include coursework in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II
  • 3 years of Natural Science, which can include coursework in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics

Recommended High School Coursework for enhanced readiness for university-level coursework

  • 4 years of English
  • 4 years of History or Social Science
  • 4 years of Math, including coursework in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, or AP Calculus, or any other math coursework of comparable rigor and content
  • 4 years of Natural Science, including coursework in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Biology II, Chemistry II, Physics II, or any other science coursework of comparable rigor and content.

If available to the student, Honors courses, Advanced Placement (AP) courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) program courses can also assist in the review and course placement.

GED (as of 2014) applicants

Applicants must earn a 660 minimum score with no section below a 145.

Missouri HiSet Applicants

Applicants must score at least a 15 on each of the 5 sections of the exam. 

Home School Students

Students completing their education through a Home School program must submit the same documentation required for all new incoming freshmen. In addition, students need to meet the published admissions criteria for incoming freshmen. If the student does not meet these requirements, additional documentation may be requested.

Maryville University is a Test-Optional Institution

Maryville University does not require the submission of standardized test scores for students applying for freshmen or transfer admission, except for in select circumstances outlined below. Students who feel their SAT or ACT scores are an accurate reflection of their academic abilities are welcome to submit them for admission consideration, scholarship consideration, and/or course placement.

In support of our strategic plan as it relates to access and in alignment with our admissions philosophy of holistic review, each applicant will be reviewed based upon their academic record and recommendations (if provided) for evidence of potential for success in college.

Test-Optional will not apply to the following situations:

  1. International students are required to submit proof of English proficiency and should consult the Office of International Admissions for information.
  2.  Students applying from secondary schools/organizations that provide only narrative evaluations rather than some form of grading scale.

Transfer Applicants

Transfer students are considered for admission primarily on the basis of their academic work at all transfer institutions as reflected in their required college or university transcripts.

  1. A 2.0-grade point average on a 4.0 scale in college work is required for admission. Students with less than a 2.0 GPA may be considered for provisional admission.
  2. High School transcripts are required for transfer students with fewer than 60 transferrable hours or for admission to certain programs. In some cases, students can attest to the successful completion of high school or its equivalent in lieu of providing an official transcript.
  3. A maximum of 68 credit hours from a two-year college will be counted toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree.
  4. A completed associate’s degree in a specific area may be counted as a minor in the completion of a bachelor’s degree. If courses from the associate’s degree subject area are applied to the major, those courses must be replaced by additional courses for the minor.
  5. Students who possess an Associate in Arts General Transfer degree from an accredited institution that follows the Missouri Coordinating Board for Higher Education guidelines, or a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, may have fulfilled Maryville’s General Education requirement.
  6. For the completion of a bachelor’s degree, at least the last 30 credit hours must be taken at Maryville.
  7. One-half of the major and minor (if required) must be taken at Maryville.

Re-Entry Applicants

Students who previously attended Maryville, but have not been enrolled for two consecutive prior semesters at Maryville, must complete the transfer application for re-admission. A re-entry student also must submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended since the last date of attendance at Maryville. Credits earned prior to re-entry may be subject to re-evaluation based on program changes that took effect during the break in Maryville attendance.

Non-Degree Seeking Applicants

Students may enroll in up to six credit hours per semester and up to fifteen (15) credit hours total without formally declaring a program, degree, or certification. However, no student can take more than two courses in any program that has special admission requirements without prior written permission from the dean. All non-degree-seeking students must complete an application and submit it to the Office of Admissions or the School of Adult and Online Education.

International Applicant Admission Requirements

Academic Programs

*Applicants intending to study inside the United States on an F-1 student visa must be enrolled in a predominately on-campus academic program.

 

International students must submit the following:

FRESHMAN ADMISSION

  1. Application for admission
  2. Official course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA calculation from a NACES member evaluation service (naces.org) for all secondary transcripts outside the U.S. or Canda.
    1. Students mid-program should send the official in-progress course-by-course evaluation to Maryville.  Upon graduation from secondary school, the final official transcript and/or diploma should be sent directly to Maryville.
  3. Proof of English proficiency. See below for requirements.
  4. Any other documentation required by a specific Maryville academic program.

TRANSFER ADMISSION

  1. Application for admission
  2. Official course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA calculation from a NACES-member evaluation service (naces.org) for any and all post-secondary school education outside the U.S.
    1. Students mid-program should send the official in-progress evaluation to Maryville for admission review. Official, final evaluations are due upon acceptance.
  3. Official transcripts from any U.S. colleges or universities attended. Official transcripts should be sent directly to the Office of Admissions at Maryville University. (Transcripts issued to students will not be accepted as official.)
  4. Proof of English proficiency. See below for requirements.
  5. Any other documentation required by a specific Maryville academic program.

 

English Requirements for Undergraduate (Freshman/Transfer) Admission

Maryville University requires that international students provide proof of English proficiency for study at the University. The following are acceptable means of providing proof of English proficiency:

  1. Undergraduate Non-Health Professions Majors:
    1. TOEFL: 69 overall with no subscore lower than 15, or
    2. IELTS: 6.0 with no subscore lower than 5, or
    3. DET: 95, or
    4. PTE ACADEMIC: 47, or
    5. ACT: 21 or higher on Writing/English section, or
    6. SAT: 480 or higher on Writing section, or
    7. ELS Center: Level 112 completed with a 2.5 grade or better, or
    8. U.S. University/College Study: English Composition 104 equivalent with a “C” grade or better. English for non-native speakers does not qualify, or
    9. A Levels: 1 “A” grade or better in English or 3 “B” grades or better in subjects other than Math, or
    10. Medium of Instruction: Medium of Instruction is English and is noted in AACRAO as a Medium of Instruction - English country, or 
    11. English is the primary and official language of the country where all study occurred as noted in AACRAO (i.e., Canada not including Quebec)

NOTE: All tests must be taken within two years of application for admission. The DET must be taken within one year of application for admission.

  1. Undergraduate Health Profession Majors
    1. TOEFL: 92 overall with no subscore lower than 23, or
    2. IELTS: 6.5 with no subscore lower than 6, or
    3. DET: 115, or
    4. PTE ACADEMIC: 62, or
    5. English is the primary and official language of the country where all study occurred as noted in AACRAO (i.e., Canada not including Quebec)

NOTE: All tests must be taken within one year of application for admission.

When scores for English language proficiency exams are inconsistent with the essay or writing sample submitted for admission to the university or academic program, a second English language proficiency exam, supplemental essay, and/or interview may be required for evaluating English language proficiency.  Evaluation of English language proficiency is separate and distinct from evaluation for admission to any given program.

The Maryville University English proficiency requirements may be higher, lower, or equal to English proficiency requirements for programs/careers requiring licensing examinations and proof of English proficiency. The onus is on the student to understand licensing requirements for the state and/or country and to meet those requirements. 

RECEIVING THE FORM I-20 DOCUMENT

Once admitted to Maryville University, the following documents must be submitted in order to receive the Form I-20:

  1. $250 Advance Tuition Payment
  2. Financial certification:
    1. Confirmation of Financial Resources
    2. Proof of finances- recent, official, stamped, bank letter or bank statement verifying the financial ability
    3. Affidavit of Support - only required if not self-funding education
  3. Copy of the biographical page of the passport.

Special Admission Requirements for Select Undergraduate Academic Programs

Design & Visual Art

Transfer Student Applicants

Transfer students seeking entrance into a Design & Visual Art program and credit for prior art and design courses are required to submit an entrance portfolio. Please see the Design & Visual Art Program for guidelines.

Education

Admission to Maryville University does not guarantee admission to the Teacher Education Programs. Students must apply for admission during the second semester of their sophomore year. Transfer students must apply for admission during their second semester of professional education coursework completed at Maryville University.  Pre-service students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Preparation program to progress beyond the sophomore or junior (transfers) year in Professional Education coursework.  Specific requirements and applications for all programs may be obtained from the School of Education Office. All requirements are subject to change if the Missouri Department of Elementary and Education certification requirements change. Teacher Education Preparation program admission requirements include the following:

  1. Maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA (3.0 graduate candidates) based on a 4.0 scale
  2. Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in all professional education courses with no grade below a “C”
  3. Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in the academic content area (Middle and Secondary only) with no grade below a “C”.
  4. Receive a passing score on the Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA) (undergraduates)
  5. Receive a satisfactory evaluation in the initial field experience
  6. Complete both the criminal background check and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Family Care Safety Screening.

Healthcare Management

In addition to general admission requirements, applicants to the Healthcare Management program are required to have a 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Music Therapy

Admission Requirements

  1. High School cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
  2. Upon acceptance, students will need to complete a “Music Experience” form including a link to a video demonstrating their musical performance abilities by performing two pieces of music on their major instrument/voice.  The “Music Experience” form asks students to list all of their experiences with private music study and/or music ensemble participation (choirs, bands, orchestra, etc).  This form will be used for music course placement purposes. 
  3. Music Therapy majors are expected to maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  4. International applicants must meet English proficiency requirements. Please see English proficiency requirements for undergraduate health profession majors under the “International Applicant Admission Requirements”.

Nursing

Pre-licensure Nursing Programs

Students who are academically dismissed from another nursing program or have two failures in nursing or nursing support courses are not eligible for admission to the Pre-Licensure BSN program for 5 years. Students transferring from another program must have a letter from the nursing program director indicating they are in good standing in the nursing program.  

Admission Requirements - Traditional Day

  1. Application Review will begin on November 1st and will continue on a rolling basis thereafter.
  2. Minimum cumulative high school and college (if applicable) GPA of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale with a minimum science and math high school GPA of 3.0. (Science courses include biology, chemistry, and physics; math courses include algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, trigonometry, and calculus) OR ACT composite of at least a 23 with subscores in science and math of at least a 20 OR SAT (As of March 2016) score range of 1100-1190.
  3. International applicants must meet English proficiency requirements. Please see English proficiency requirements for undergraduate health profession majors under the “International Applicant Admission Requirements”.

Admission Requirements - Fast Track Program  

  1. 63 credits of general education requirements must be completed.
  2. Admission to Maryville University.
  3. Minimum cumulative college GPA of 3.25 in all coursework. 
  4. Minimum nursing core GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
    1. Nursing core courses (or equivalent): BIOL 101 Anatomy & Physiology I,  BIOL 102 Anatomy & Physiology II, BIOL 104 Microbiology, CHEM 120 Chemistry (or higher), PSYC 254 Lifespan Development, ENGL 104, MATH 115 or 116, and undergraduate statistics course. 
  5. Science courses must have been completed within the last seven (7) years.

Admission Requirements - Evening and Weekend Program 

  1. 63 credits of general education requirements must be completed.
  2. Admission to Maryville University
  3. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  4. Minimum nursing core GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
    1. Nursing core courses (or equivalent): BIOL 101 Anatomy & Physiology I,  BIOL 102 Anatomy & Physiology II, BIOL 104 Microbiology, CHEM 120 Chemistry (or higher), PSYC 254 Lifespan Development, ENGL 104, MATH 115 or 116, and undergraduate statistics course. 
  5. Science courses must have been completed within the last seven (7) years.

Post-licensure Nursing Program

Admission Requirements - RN to BSN Completion Program

  1. Admission to Maryville University.
  2. Current unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse.
  3. Cumulative college GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.  Students with less than a 2.5 cumulative college GPA may be considered for provisional admission.
  4. International applicants must meet English proficiency requirements. Please see English proficiency requirements for undergraduate health profession majors under the “International Applicant Admission Requirements”.
  5. A nursing degree from a country other than the United States must request an evaluation from the Commission on Graduates from Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) www.cgfns.org.

Occupational Therapy

Students entering Maryville as freshmen may qualify for early admission to the graduate Occupational Therapy Program. Priority for acceptance will be based on program admission criteria and the date of a completed application.

Requirements for early direct admission include:

  1. Review will begin November 1st and will continue on a rolling basis thereafter.
  2. High school cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale).
  3. International applicants must meet English proficiency requirements. Please see English proficiency requirements for undergraduate health profession majors under the “International Applicant Admission Requirements” .

If an applicant is accepted as a student for early direct admission they must meet the following requirements to maintain their position in an entering class:

  1. Achieve minimum cumulative and semester GPAs of at least 3.0 throughout undergraduate coursework at Maryville.
  2. Earn a grade of “C” or better in all prerequisite courses for the post-baccalaureate curriculum.

Physical Therapy

Admission Requirements for Maryville’s Early Assurance (Freshman Admit) Physical Therapy program.

  1. Application Review will begin November 1st and will continue on a rolling basis thereafter.
  2. Minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) from high school with a minimum 3.0 Math & Science GPA(Science courses should include biology, chemistry, and physics; math courses should include algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, trigonometry, or calculus) or ACT composite score of 24 with minimum Math and Science Reasoning subscores of 20 or new SAT (As of March 2016) score of 1180. All test values must be earned on the same exam.
  3. International applicants must meet English proficiency requirements. Please see English proficiency requirements for undergraduate health profession majors under the “International Applicant Admission Requirements”.

Acceptance into the program as a freshman assures the student a place in the professional portion of the program if the student maintains full-time enrollment with the required grade point average and completes specified courses with required grades. Physical therapist students also earn an undergraduate degree in Health Science upon successfully completing the first four years of the program. All physical therapy students must be full-time students unless accepted under special circumstances and must maintain a cumulative 3.0-grade point average.

At the present time, the Physical Therapy Program at Maryville is designed to be an Early Assurance (freshman admit) program and is not accepting external transfer students. Current Maryville students can apply by contacting the Physical Therapy Program directly for application information.

Social Work

Admission to Maryville University and the Social Work program does not guarantee continuation in the program or field placement.  Advancement in the social work program requires signing a statement indicating acceptance of the National Association of Social Work Ethics.  In addition, students will have to successfully write a professional standards statement centered on the professional behaviors and ethical standards required for the profession of social work.  A rubric will be provided for this statement. Both of these activities will be assigned and reviewed in SWRK 202: Professional Practice: Boundaries, Ethics, Legalities, and Self Care in the Field.

Students not meeting a 2.0 GPA at the time of admission must submit a personal statement discussing their prior academic standing, their decision to return to school at this time, and the support systems they have in place to help ensure success.

Communication Sciences and Disorders

In addition to general admission requirements, applicants to the Communication Sciences and Disorders program are required to have a 2.5 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Speech-Language Pathology

Students entering Maryville as freshmen Communication Science & Disorders majors may qualify for early admission to the graduate Speech-Language Pathology program.  Priority for acceptance will be based on specific academic criteria and the date of a completed application.

  1. Review will begin on November 1st and will continue on a rolling basis thereafter.
  2. High school cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale).
  3. International students must meet English proficiency requirements.  Please see English proficiency requirements for undergraduate health profession majors under the “International Applicant Admission Requirements”.

If an applicant is accepted as a student for early direct admission, they must meet the following requirements to maintain their position in an entering graduate cohort:

  1. Achieve a minimum cumulative AND semester GPA of at least 3.00 in undergraduate coursework at Maryville.
  2. Complete all CMSD major courses on ground (vs. online). The only exception to this includes CMSD courses that are exclusively offered online (CMSD-310 and CMSD-440).
  3. Earn a grade of “B-” or better in all pre-requisite coursework for the speech-language pathology curriculum.
    This includes all major (CMSD) courses as well as ASHA’s prerequisite courses in biological science (BIOL-101 and BIOL-102), statistics (SOSC-341), physical science (PHYS-120 or CHEM 120), and social and/or behavioral science (social science courses could include: ethnic and cultural studies, economics, gender and sexuality studies, political science; behavioral sciences could include psychology, criminology, and cognitive science courses).
  4. Complete and document a minimum of 25 hours of observation of speech-language pathology treatment and/or assessment.
  5. Complete and document a minimum of 25 assisting hours in speech-language pathology treatment and/or assessment.
  6. Graduate with a baccalaureate degree from Maryville University prior to enrollment in the Maryville Speech-Language Pathology Program.
