EDUC 528 - Literacy Development Credits: 3 This course is designed to help early childhood candidates understand young children’s literacy development, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The course focuses on developing an understanding of instructional strategies for supporting children from birth through second grade, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Another focus is placed on organizing and managing a literacy environment that meets the needs of diverse learners with varying learning needs. The emphasis of this course is place-based learning, where students will design learning experiences and implement them with preschool learners. This course will meet off Maryville University Campus for approximately half of the class sessions. This course, taken at the graduate level, requires additional readings and assignments.
