PSYC 368 - Science of Mindfulness Credits: 3 In this course, we will explore the burgeoning field of the science of mindfulness. Mindfulness-based interventions such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) have been shown to have salutary effects on physical health (chronic pain, immune system), psychological disorders (anxiety, depression, addiction), cognitive health (working memory, sustained attention), interpersonal outcomes (fostering healthy relationships with oneself and others), as well as mitigating bias and “us versus them” thinking. We will explore the current research on the psychological and neurobiological mechanisms underpinning mindfulness practices and then engage in the practices (“cross-fit training for the mind”) to test them for ourselves. We’ll also explore the application of mindfulness to our everyday lives as well as to social action through “engaged mindfulness.” Mindfulness goes beyond individual practice to integrating the practices into our everyday lives to promote flourishing, reduce distress (our own and others’), and effect positive social change. Prerequisite: PSYC-101 or PSYC-202H
