The Accounting program provides you with the technical and professional skills needed in the ever-changing, fast-paced accounting profession.  An accounting degree opens opportunities in the traditional areas of accounting - auditing, taxation and financial reporting - and offers the foundation for more specialized areas such as risk management, fraud and forensics, and sustainability reporting and assurance.  The accounting curriculum prepares you for careers in public accounting, corporate accounting, consulting, government and nonprofit organization, and tax services; and provides sufficient coursework should you plan to obtain CPA licensure or pursue other professional certifications.

After completing the Accounting program, you will know the various functions of accounting and the underlying principles and concepts of accounting theory, and have the ability to apply these principles to accounting problems, situations and hands-on projects.   The program focuses on building technical competence, analytical abilities, communication and interpersonal skills, and ethical conduct, while providing a balance of liberal arts, business and accounting courses.

Business Core Requirement

All majors in the School of Business must complete a business core of 36 - 39 credit hours.

Note:

All majors in the School of Business must take a minimum of MATH 117 College Algebra.

Accounting Major Requirements

Accounting majors complete 31 credit hours in accounting, including six elective hours that allow students to focus on a more specific area of interest or proficiency.

Note:

Accounting majors must also take an ethics course.

CPA Examination Eligibility

To be eligible to sit for the CPA Examination in Missouri and many other states, candidates are required to complete 150 credit hours of college level course work. Maryville offers several approaches to satisfy this requirement. One approach is to obtain degrees in both Accounting and Accounting Systems & Forensics.  A second way to meet the 150-hour requirement is through the Early Access to the MBA Program, which allows a transition into the University’s MBA Program during the senior year. Further, students can complete the additional hours for CPA Exam eligibility by focusing on another discipline in addition to accounting.  Students should contact their adviser for more information and guidance. For additional information regarding the CPA exam, go to www.cpa-exam.org.
