Biology, B.S. leading to the M.A. in Education
(with an area of concentration in Secondary Teaching and Inquiry/Leading to Unified Science and Biology Certification)
Maryville students who wish to teach biology in grades 9 – 12 complete the biology major with specific certification requirements and complete the M.A. in Education in their fifth year. A student may enter this program while an undergraduate at Maryville University through the Early Access Program.
The Education Minor provides early access to the M.A. in Education Secondary Teaching and Inquiry (MA/STI). Students must maintain an overall 2.75 GPA and a 3.0 GPA in the content area. Students enrolled in this program are advised by a School of Education adviser and an Arts & Sciences adviser in their content area. Students must work closely with both advisers to ensure completion of the appropriate and required coursework in a timely manner. Early access does not guarantee acceptance into the M.A. in Education program but does provide appropriate background for possible success. Candidates apply for the Master’s program in the fall of their senior year. Early access does not guarantee acceptance into the MA/STI. Acceptance into the MA/STI requires cumulative 3.0 GPA, 3.0 in content, Praxis II passing score, to submit the graduate school application form, to submit an essay, to submit three letters of recommendations, and a successful interview with the mentoring team. See the School of Education: Secondary Education Bridge section for details.
