Humanities Minor

The Humanities Minor (21 credit hours) provides students with a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of the Humanities, especially in the Western tradition. Students can choose classes from a wide variety of fields, including art, film, history, literature, music, philosophy, and religion.

A minor in Humanities compliments many degrees. For example,

  • Complementary benefits of the Humanities minor for Biology include:

         Enhanced close-reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Studying literature, art, and music has been proven to enhance empathy and ethical choices, which are essential in the sciences, particularly biology.

  •  Complementary benefits of the Humanities minor for Communication include:

         Enhanced skills in writing, critical thinking, speech, and argumentation.  Increased exposure to diverse cultures, rhetoric, languages, genres, and viewpoints. Increased film and visual literacy.

  • Complementary benefits of the Humanities minor for Business include:

        Studying literature, art, and music has been proven to enhance empathy and ethical choices. Enhanced writing, speech, and argumentation skills. Increased cultural literacy and exposure to diverse cultures, essential when    working with clients.

The required introductory course for the Minor is HUM 101: Themes in Western Culture 

  (3 credit hours).

Additional Requirements


Additionally, students will select 6 courses (18 credit hours) from the list below; other courses (such as Special Studies) may be approved by the Humanities program director. The 6 courses have to cover at least 4 different areas of study (= include 4 different prefixes).

 

No more than 2 of the courses may double count toward a student’s general education requirement.
