(18 credits)

Students will learn about individuals who have severe hearing loss/deafness, various cultures within the Deaf Community, rearing children who are deaf, social stigmas associated with deafness, educational and employment opportunities, various forms of sign language used in the Deaf community, and the future of sign language usage with the hearing impaired/Deaf population in light of advances in cochlear implant surgery.

For students who come to Maryville with significant knowledge of American Sign Language, some of the below courses may be waived (HEPR 204 & HEPR 205). If these courses are waived, the student will need to increase the number of required elective courses in order to meet the minimum credit requirement of 18 hours for the minor. Students who are interested in waiving one or more of these courses will need to speak to their Advisor, and the director of the Speech-Language Pathology program to complete an exception to registration form.
