ENGL 311 - Adolescence in American Literature Credits: 3 When you hear the word adolescence, what do you think of? Is it synonymous with “teenager,” or something else? How have we come to understand adolescence—and whose adolescence? And how has adolescence been represented by—and subsequently, shaped by—American literature? This course will consider key novels from the 1950s to the present. How have our authors has defined, redefined, and challenged notions of what “adolescence,” and, by extension, childhood and adulthood, mean? In doing so, we will consider the contexts in which the novels were originally published; their receptions and reputations, then and now; and the controversies each has caused, considering that every book in this class has been challenged or banned at some point in its history,
frequently and to this day. General Education Area: Literature Cross-listed: ENGL-211 Prerequisite: COMP-101
