Official Transcripts

  • To be considered official, transcripts must be received by Maryville University directly from the issuing institution. If the student is to deliver transcripts, they must be in sealed, unopened envelopes and certified with the official seal of the issuing institution.
  • Electronic transcripts must be received via a secure electronic service such as The National Student Clearinghouse or Parchment and must be issued to Maryville, not the student. E-transcripts that are issued to the student and forwarded to Maryville are not considered official.
  • If the official transcript that Maryville University receives includes any in-progress coursework, an additional final transcript should be requested showing all completed work from the issuing institution.

Undergraduate Transfer Policies

General Credit Guidelines

  • Maryville University will accept transfer credits from regionally accredited institutions.
  • Transfer credit is reviewed and approved by Academic Records in conjunction with the academic department.
  • Only College level credit can be accepted.
  • For duplicate courses, the higher grade will be entered.
  • Maryville will only accept coursework where a satisfactory grade was earned. This is defined as any passing grade (Satisfactory, Pass, and letter grades of C- or above).
  • D grades will only be considered for credit if they are part of a conferred degree. For more information about Maryville’s policies regarding D grades click here .

Students are advised to meet with their admissions representative or advisor for planning the application of external credits toward a Maryville University credential. All transfer credit will be formally evaluated and recorded by the Academic Records team upon receipt of official transcripts. Transfer credit awarded may not fulfill specific credential requirements, please check your My Progress page in Self-Service to see how a specific transfer course has applied.

If the student has previously earned a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, the Maryville University general education requirement will be satisfied.   Any courses that are considered a general education requirement that may also serve as a major requirement will not be waived.

If the student has previously earned an Associate in Arts (AA), an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT), or an Associate in Science (AS) degree from a regionally accredited institution, then the Maryville University general education requirements will be satisfied. Any courses that are considered a general education requirement that may also serve as a major requirement will not be waived.

Maryville’s general education is not satisfied if the student earned any other type of Associate’s degree, such as an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) or an Associate of Fine Art.

If you believe you have met any of the above requirements for a waiver of your general education requirements, please contact your advisor for a formal review.

Transfer Equivalency Database

This transfer equivalency database will help you learn how your previous college coursework may transfer to Maryville University.

Please take note of the following policies while using the information found in the database:

  • This database is to be used as a resource for you to see how Maryville University has accepted transfer credit in the past. However, an official evaluation is not complete until Academic Records receives, reviews, and records your transfer credit onto your academic record upon admission to the University.
  • All transfer equivalencies are subject to change. Maryville strives to provide the most accurate information possible, but our courses are regularly updated in order to teach relevant content. The transfer equivalencies are revised periodically in order to match our current course content.
  • If you do not see your college or course in the database, that doesn’t mean it won’t transfer. New schools and courses are being added on a daily basis. If you don’t see your course(s) please reach out to academicrecords@maryville.edu to inquire about how your credit(s) might transfer.
  • Credits will transfer with the hours they received at the transfer institution. Maryville University operates on a semester calendar. Quarter hours will transfer at a rate of 1 quarter-hour to 2/3 of a semester hour.

Graduate students seeking credit for coursework taken at previous institutions should contact their advisor or program director as course evaluation is handled on an individual student basis at the graduate level.

Maryville University will only accept coursework where a satisfactory grade was earned. The majority of graduate programs define this as any passing grade (letter grades of B- or above, Satisfactory, Pass).

Certificate Transfer Policies

Students can transfer a maximum of 6 credits into a Certificate program. However, internal credit can count for multiple programs. A maximum of 6 credits can count for multiple certificates. If more than 6 credits of overlap exist between certificates, substitutions will be required for a student to complete the second certificate.

Course Specific Transfer Policies

Maryville University strives to be as transfer credit friendly as possible; however, some academic departments have limitations and/or restrictions regarding direct transfer equivalencies due to program-specific accreditation requirements and other factors.

Computer Science Courses (COSC):

  • Computer Science Courses taken over 10 years ago will be evaluated as Computer Science electives (COSC-292 or 492).

Design and Visual Art Courses (AD…):

  • All Art and Design courses (except for Art History (ADAH) courses) will be initially evaluated as Art electives (ART-292 or 492), which will count toward general education requirements. Upon receipt of a portfolio for Art and Design majors and minors students, direct equivalencies will be approved by the department on a student-by-student basis and communicated to Academic Records for re-evaluation.

Education Courses (EDUC):

  • All education courses will be initially evaluated as Education electives (EDUC-292 or 492). Direct equivalencies will be approved by the department for Education major and minor students on a student-by-student basis and communicated to Academic Records for re-evaluation.

Information Systems Courses (ISYS):

  • Courses taken over 10 years ago will be evaluated as Information Systems electives (ISYS-292 or 492), except for courses equivalent to Digital Foundations (ISYS-100).

Natural Sciences Courses:

  • To be equated to a Maryville course that has a laboratory component, the sending institution’s course must also have a lab. If the corresponding lab is not passed or taken, or if the course is lecture-only, the transfer credit will be evaluated as an elective.
  • If the sending institution breaks up Anatomy and Physiology into separate courses, both must be taken with labs to equate to Maryville’s Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BIOL-101/101L and BIOL-102/102L).

Nursing Courses (NURS):

  • All undergraduate nursing courses will be initially evaluated as general electives (ELECT-292 or 492). Direct equivalencies will be approved by the department for Nursing major students on a student-by-student basis and communicated to Academic Records for re-evaluation.
  • Graduate nursing coursework is approved by the department on an individual basis.
  • Post-Masters Graduate Nursing coursework has additional policies that can be found here .

Social Work Courses (SWRK):

  • Direct equivalencies can only be transferred from institutions with Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) program accreditation. Courses from non-accredited programs will be evaluated as general electives (ELECT-292 or 492).
  • Courses taken over 7 years ago will be evaluated as general electives (ELECT-292 or 492).
  • Courses similar to SWRK-202 and SWRK-402 will only transfer as general electives (ELECT-292 or 492). SWRK-202 and SWRK-402 must be taken at Maryville University to complete the Social Work major.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Equivalencies

Students who have completed IB coursework are awarded credit based on scores on the exams.  Students who submit a score of 5 or higher on IB Standard Level (SL) or Higher-Level (HL) exams will usually receive 3 credits by exam. Some programs such as Design and Visual Art use a portfolio or other methods to determine the awarding of credit for students in their programs. An original grade report must be sent from IB directly to Maryville’s Student Service Center in order for a student to receive credit for exams.

Maryville University recognizes all the work that goes into taking an International Baccalaureate (IB) course and pursuing an IB diploma.  Even though the IBO announced the cancellation of May 2020 exams, we will continue to offer credit for courses taken through the IB program.  IB will be awarding students a grade for each of their registered subjects on the normal 1-7 scale, using a calculation that takes into account their coursework grades and their predicted grades.  Based on the calculated grades that the IB will provide, Maryville will continue to award academic credit for strong performance on all Higher Level and Standard Level exams.  Please review the International Baccalaureate Equivalencies Chart below for information on specific credit awards.
