HIST 110 - Women in American History Credits: 3 This course explores the impact of historical events on the lives of American women and, in turn, the many roles women played in shaping American history. Through such an exploration, students will comprehend how both race and gender shaped women’s activities and treatment in American society. Topics include indigenous women’s lives; gender and family life under slavery; the impact of industrialization on women of different classes; women’s political activities including the anti-slavery movement, the suffrage movement, the 19th Amendment, and the resurgence of feminism in the 1960s; and transformations in the lives of modern women including work, politics, and sexuality. Students will analyze primary sources in their exploration of these various historical events, paying particular attention to what they reveal about gender ideologies throughout time. Further, the course emphasizes the ways that these historical topics still hold relevance today. Note: Fulfills state requirements.
