HUM 301 - Masterpieces of Western Culture Credits: 3 In this course, we will closely read great works of Western literature in order to explore their connections to each other and to big themes, possibly including life and death, fate and free will, and good and evil. In doing so, we will evaluate what these big ideas meant in their own timesincluding discussions of and comparison with cultural artifacts from famous works of art through memes and cartoonsand what they mean today. In doing so, we can both assume that these works are regarded as masterpieces, but at the same time, we can ask ourselves why this is the case and what it means for a work of literature or art to be a masterpiece in the first place.
