The mission of the Simon School of Business is to prepare students and professionals to be ethical, adaptable, socially-responsible, and technically-adept leaders in diverse and dynamic business environments through its market-relevant curriculum developed with input from engaged business partners.  Our curriculum provides students with opportunities to broaden their perspectives, develop their critical thinking, interpersonal and communication skills and enhance their technological skillsets, and to apply these skills to address real-world business problems.

An important component of the mission is to build significant relationships with corporations within Maryville Centre and throughout the St. Louis region. These relationships provide professional expertise and internship opportunities for our students and are a model of collegiate/corporate cooperation. As the business environment becomes increasingly complex and global, specialties of business become more interdisciplinary. Education for this changing world must emphasize the integration of business acumen, technological acumen, and interpersonal skill development in addressing complex and diverse business challenges.

Conditional Acceptance

Applications to the Simon School of Business graduate programs with a cumulative undergraduate grade point average below a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or with a baccalaureate degree in a non-business field may apply for conditional acceptance.

Course Load

Students typically take a total of 6 to 12 credit hours per semester depending on program pace.

Grade Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 36 credit hours for the MBA and MA in Management and Leadership and 30 credit hours for the MS in Cybersecurity, MS in Accounting, MS in Software Development, and MS in Data Analytics degrees with a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and no more than two grades of “C”.  Students who receive a third grade of “C” or receive a grade of “D”, F”, or “AF” will automatically be dropped from the program the semester in which the grade is received. Grades of “C-” are also considered unacceptable at the graduate level. Students will be required to repeat a course in which a final grade of “C-” was earned, but students will not be dismissed from the program (unless it is the third course in which a grade of “C” or “C-” was earned).

At the end of each session, a student with a GPA below a 3.00 will receive a letter to that effect.  If the GPA stays below a 3.00 for two consecutive sessions, the student will be dropped from the program.

To be considered for re-admission to the Simon School of Business graduate programs, the student must submit a letter of appeal to the Graduate Admissions Committee providing the Committee with documentation that the deficiencies have been remedied. If the student has been out for three consecutive semesters, he/she must also submit an updated application for admission. If the student is re-admitted, all previous course work will be counted toward the degree if it meets the Five Year Policy. The student will also be subject to all policies and procedures in effect at the time the student is re-admitted to the Simon School of Business graduate programs. Students who are re-admitted after appealing a dismissal who receive another failing grade will be dismissed from the program and cannot appeal a second time.

Graduation

Degree candidates must complete an application for graduation prior to the final semester that the degree will be completed. All graduate degree requirements must be completed in order to be eligible for participation in the commencement ceremony. Apply for graduation through your student portal.

Graduate Programs

Offered within the John E. Simon School of Business are a Business Administration, M.B.A. , a Accounting, M.S. , a Cybersecurity, M.S. , a Data Analytics, M.S. , Software Development, M.S. , and a Management and Leadership, M.A. .  For entrance requirements into any of these programs, see the section on Graduate Admission Requirements  . These graduate programs blend academic study with professional experience in a curriculum that allows the student to apply classroom concepts to current employment activities. Early Access Program (5-year UG/GR degrees)

The early access program provides students the opportunity to accelerate their progress toward graduate programs. Undergraduate students accepted into the early access program may take 12 credit hours at the graduate level that count toward BOTH the undergraduate and graduate degrees (with credit hours billed at the undergraduate rate). Students who have completed at least 75 undergraduate credit hours (at least 20 credit hours at Maryville) and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher may apply for admission to the program. Students would need approximately 90 hours completed in order to begin taking the graduate level early access courses. Students should talk with their advisor about the courses they wish to take at the graduate level and how those courses will fit into their undergraduate program. Students must receive a grade of B or higher in the early access graduate courses to remain in the early access program.

Certificate in Graduate Studies

Project Management Graduate Certificate

This certificate is available to students with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Students who do not have the necessary prerequisites may be required to take additional classes (beyond the 18 credit hours).

Students who have taken an area course previously will be allowed to replace it with another course or a special studies course in that area. In a special studies course, they will work with a full-time faculty member who teaches in the area and be directed through readings and research to gain a current comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

The certificate program will rely on individualized mentoring by the School of Business faculty to ensure that students possess the necessary background in their area of choice. Students will be included in the graduate-level elective courses that fulfill the requirements of their certificate program.
