Data Science with a Business Administration Minor  is a unique and innovative program that integrates computer skills and mathematical theory with practical applications in economics, finance and general business. This multidisciplinary program, co-sponsored with Maryville’s John E. Simon School of Business, enhances the employment opportunities of mathematically oriented students in a wide variety of fields in the world of business and finance.

Prospective applicants should have a solid background in mathematics and an interest in the world of business and technology.

Data Science as a Career

The data scientist combines business, statistics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to advance human capabilities across various professional fields (business, engineering, health, social sciences, computer science, etc.). Data scientists work in all kinds of roles from large corporations to lean startups. Data scientists might help policy makers develop better decisions, or they might work in finance or healthcare. Data scientists are technically proficient and often use a number of computer code languages to compile and synthesize data. A background in advanced statistics and intermediate to advanced levels of programming skill are required. Depending on the field, data scientists also have to be creative to interpret and visualize data expressions.

Accelerated Master of Science in Actuarial Science, Data Science, and Artificial Intelligence

The Accelerated Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or Actuarial Science provides a unique opportunity for Maryville University undergraduates majoring in Data Science to earn their master’s degree in just one additional year. Through this accelerated option, students can apply four courses (12 credits) taken during their senior year as part of their undergraduate curriculum towards their master’s degree requirements. In the fifth year of study, students will complete an additional 24 credits to fulfill the remaining requirements for the master’s degree.

To be eligible for early access to the Actuarial Science, M.S.Data Science, M.S., or Artificial Intelligence, M.S. students must have a minimum of 75 undergraduate credits, at least 20 of which must be earned at Maryville University. Additionally, applicants should have a minimum GPA of 3.25. It’s worth noting that Maryville students entering the accelerated master’s program are not required to submit GRE or TOEFL scores.
